King’s Lynn Citizen’s Advice Witness Service speaker Katy Muller

At a recent meeting we were pleased to welcome Katy Muller from the Court Witness Service. She gave us an informative talk which gave rise to a lively Q&A session. The Witness Service was founded in 1994 by Victim Support after research showed that witnesses needed help to testify in court. The service is now funded by the Ministry of Justice and Citizen’s Advice run the service.  The Witness Service supports witnesses who are attending criminal courts to give evidence relating to perpetrators and victims.  Support can be provided to children, vulnerable adults and support animals. Because the Witness Service is an off-shoot of Citizen’s Advice, help can extend beyond the court case.  Volunteers for the Witness Service often build a rapport with the witness, with conversations taking place which can lead to witnesses and their extended family being able to receive help or signposting

At our meeting in March we were entertained by designer and milliner Pat Brown. Pat is the owner of The Extraordinary Hat Company based in Fakenham. Pat told us about her career and how she came to be a milliner. As a service wife posted to Germany she assisted in a middle school. On return to the UK she became a teaching assistant where she thoroughly enjoyed the craft activities.  She discovered a talent for maths, gaining a place at a teacher training college, and this resulted in a 33 year career as a primary school teacher and head teacher. Pat moved to Norfolk to be near elderly parents and took up a head teacher post in Thetford. She retired and then returned to teaching part-time for 6 years. During her pre-retirement phase she was able to spend one day a week learning about silversmithing

Love + Harmony + Human Rights Together one might say Are bringing peace within our sights And showing us the way. For what matters race, what matters creed What matters sexual orientation It’s up to us to take the lead And shield all, from exploitation For harmony and peace to thrive And war and famine flounder It’s incumbent on us all to strive To make each other prouder So lets stand with pride and unity By linking arms together To form a chain of humanity And protect human rights forever Because every human has the right To feel free and emancipated So let’s stand strong, let’s fight the fight ‘Till all are liberated! by SI King’s Lynn President Julie Williams To mark UN Human Rights Day 10th December 2021

Modern Day Slavery – we can make a difference

Modern Day Slavery – we can make a difference

Following a Study Day session on Modern Day Slavery in April 2021, members of our club were keen to discover more about the situation locally – historically an agricultural area with large numbers of migrant workers involved in food production and who could be at risk of exploitation. A contact with the Wisbech and Fenland Museum led to the idea of an event in partnership with them as they house the Thomas Clarkson Collection. Clarkson was one of the main architects of the anti-slavery movement in the 18th century. In partnership with Wisbech and Fenland Museum, we held an online event in September 2021. This unique event brought together organisations working to abolish modern slavery, community organisations and heritage professionals to raise awareness, share initiatives and, importantly, ask what we can do to make a difference. There were speakers from a community project assisting migrant

The club held its first event post pandemic in August 2021 – a lively garden party and wine tasting to raise funds for West Norfolk Young Carers.  We were delighted to raise over £350 that will help with purchasing tickets to the pantomime this winter and are now looking forward to making plans for more events when we can socialise and raise funds that will support activities and organisations that we work with.
