16 Days of Activism

16 Days of Activism

We bought a roll of orange ribbon and a number of members took a length and displayed the ribbons outside their homes, usually with a poster printed from the SIGBI resources. The orange signifies ‘hope’ within the UN’s 16 Days of Activism to end Violence against Women and Children. The ribbons on the gate were seen by over 80 people on the first afternoon they were in place. There is a primary school at the end of the road and the parents were looking at the poster and ribbons on their way to the school, and then the older children were reading and discussing the poster on the way back. Later on some secondary pupils were also stopping and reading the poster and talking about it.  We also managed to have the lights on Kirkcaldy Promenade ‘oranged’ during the 16 Days.

The club held a fashion show in Mackays store in Glenrothes in September 2022. Some of our members and their family were models, as well as some of the shop assistants and their families. The evening was very successful and raised almost £800 for the non-profit Leading Change Uganda, led by Linda Mitchell who had recently talked to the club about the good work done by LCG.

We had some help from friends and family and a former member. The trees were very tiny ‘whips’ but still required a deep hole with some volcanic rock dust sprinkled at the bottom. It was hard work! The Eco-Cemetery will contain traditional graves, as well as a columbarium, which is like an iron age barrow,

Sorting clothes for Afghan Refugees

When Afghan refugees were rescued from their homeland a number of them came to Fife and were accommodated in a local hotel. Fifers were keen to help and Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) coordinated donations, requesting clothes for men, women and children as well as bedding, and toys and equipment for babies and children. Luckily FVA had access to a large open-plan office building as they were inundated with donations from churches and community groups and individuals from all over Fife. FVA put out a call for help to sort out the donations and two members of the club spent weeks helping to hang items in size order or pack them on shelves, or boxes for re-stocking, cleaning and displaying toys, books and equipment. Every few days a family would come in to choose whatever they needed for their new life.

Member Myra met with Yvonne Caie who is the Benevolent Nurse Specialist at the Maternity Unit, Victoria Hospital. She discussed with her what our members could knit for the Maternity Unit. Yvonne explained that when a baby is stillborn or passes away shortly after birth that the parents are given a memory box, and that a blanket is given to them which covers the box, and which they can keep. After a few months Myra was able to present Yvonne with 30 knitted white blankets, and Yvonne was absolutely delighted with our efforts.

Knitters, crafters and stitchers from all over the UK came together with a heart-felt message for the politicians at the COP26 talks in Glasgow that it is time to put the earth – and not money – centre stage in political decisions. Crafters set out to make 1.5 miles of messages about how the earth needs protecting from climate change and environmental destruction to represent the 1.5°C target in the Paris Agreement. The panels were used for campaigning both before and after COP26 where they were displayed on the washing lines and railings on Glasgow Green. Roberta’s panel was also used in the Scottish Parliament when Soroptimists had a reception there. Many of the panels which were knitted or padded were stitched together to make blankets which were then donated to homeless shelters. Over a year later communities up and down the UK are

President Annette and Roberta delivered almost 3kg of medicine blister packs to Superdrug on Sunday. Soroptimists all over the country have been collecting the blister packs for the last few weeks for TerracCycle to recycle in the first ‘Little Packs, Big Impact’ initiative. When TerraCyle receive the packs they sort them into reusable raw materials to make such things as outdoor furniture, which prevents the packs from spending a lifetime in landfill. The initiative has been under threat due to costs but we are pleased that almost two years later it is still ongoing.
