We spent some time working to support the SIGBI BIG Project – Birthing in the Gambia – in association with MCAI, as are many other clubs. This project aims to improve conditions for women and their infants in difficult circumstances, in line with the UN Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
Our Literary Prize project continues to build on the success of the inaugural competition in 2012 and subsequent biennial events, now running the 5th competition in 2020. This project is directed at promoting opportunities for black and asian women who are under-represented in British published literature.
We have been supporting Kidz in Kampz, our president’s chosen charity, and we have heard direct from the organisers about conditions in the camps. http://www.kidzinkampz-childrenscharity.co.uk/
Club members have collected vitamin and mineral supplements for children from Chernobyl visiting Leeds in August 2013 and 2014.
We are also currently raising funds to send to our sister clubs in Zimbabwe as a follow up to an earlier project supporting girls in school – help is now needed for replacement flooring.
Following a SIGBI resolution we have been seeking to publicise and support work in the field of ovarian cancer, a disease which has been in the news recently with the sad death of Pierce Brosnan’s daughter following earlier deaths of other family members.
Target Ovarian Cancer’s recent Pathfinder Study showed that there is very low awareness that women should know their family history of breast, ovarian and prostate cancer on both their mother’s and father’s side of the family. Do you know yours?
