Specialist Domestic Abuse Courts – How Special Are They in 2022?
Previous local project: Collection of Knickers for Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre

Soroptimist International Greater London worked with the Yarl’s Wood Befrienders to provide knickers, and other essentials to the women who were detained at Yarl’s Wood Immigration Removal Centre. The Yarl’s Wood Befrienders is a charity that offers both emotional and practical support for the women detained in Yarl’s Wood IRC. The detainees arrive with little to nothing, often only the clothes they are wearing. The items donated offer a small token of kindness during a distressing time, and many have said it has improved their well-being.

To date, SIGL has donated more that 50 packs of knickers. We are continuing to collect and donate these quarterly. For more information, please see www.ywbefrienders.org.

Organisation-wide Projects:

Meru Women’s Garden Project 2016-2019

Meru County has a largely rural population with HIV/AIDs prevalent in the region.  Meru Women’s Garden Project will support some of the poorest women-led households in Kenya, and is entirely focussed on providing opportunities to women and girls who may never otherwise be given the chance to earn an income, and gives them status within their community. It fully embraces the three key areas at the heart of SIGBI’s Programme Focus Goals – Educate, Empower and Enable. Improved food production and education will support women and girls to transform their lives and those of others through a process of cascade learning and mentoring thereby reducing poverty, improving health and increasing employment.
