Seven Middlesbrough Soroptimists have recently received awards or been shortlisted  for service and achievement

In the Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards 2012 ceremony held recently, several Middlesbrough Soroptimists did the club proud.

Ibtihal Albasry, who hails from Iraq, was nominated as Woman of the Year, and Kauser Hussain was shortlisted for an individual Community Award (her daughter Ambreen being nominated for the Youth Award).

Shahda Khan, who works for Middlesbrough Council, collected the Public Sector Award for the Type 2 diabetes work that she is delivering in partnership with Middlesbrough NHS.

Susan Mansaray, originally from Sierra Leone, and Ibtihal, were jointly given an award as representatives of the North-East Region Refugee Forum. Uzma Kazmi helped to organise the event. Most prestigiously of all, Kath Sainsbury, who works for Justice First, a local charity supporting asylum seekers, was given the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Uzma Kazmi was also recently shortlisted for a Middlesbrough One Planet Living Award for her work in organising a Ladies’ Talent Show earlier this year.  Uzma was also nominated for Middlesbrough Volunteering Star Awards 2012 in three categories for the radio programme that she does every Saturday on Community Voice, FM 104.5. Congratulations to you all!

Let us also not forget that two of our members, Shahda Khan and Jean Slater have been awarded the MBE.

What a talented group of women we have!
