April 2016 Speaker Meeting
Such a wonderful, inspirational presentation by Dave Cook, founder of Teams4U! He spoke about the wide range of projects that Teams4U run around the world, but he focused mainly on Develop with Dignity.
“There are 10,500 schoolgirls aged 12-16 in the Kumi District. Over 6,300 will drop out of education before they graduate. One of the biggest reasons for this is the estimated 1 in 4 weeks each of them lose because of menstruation. The rural shops don’t sell sanitary towels and even if they did 1 pack costs more than 1 person’s daily wage (employment rates as low as 1 in 7 in Kumi) and are absolutely no use if the child doesn’t own underwear.”
Develop with Dignity provides school girls in Uganda with pants and washable, reusable sanitary pads. The pads are now made in Uganda, and are designed to be washed in cold water and will dry in an hour. The pads will last for 18 months.
Something this simple has changed the lives of these girls – studies in Ghana and Uganda have shown that the absenteeism rate for girls falls by 30% when they are provided with sanitary pads and pants.
£5 will provide a pack to help a girl stay in school for over a year.
