Presidents Message – Number 62

Good Morning to all my sister Soroptimists

What a busy week we, and the world, have been having.  Watching the news of the G7 from Cornwall reminds us of how important it is to communicate, listen and negotiate the best possible outcomes to our problems.  I won’t comment on the football Euro’s matches that are also going to dominate the TV screenings for a few weeks, but do hope that the pleas for respect and kindness during these often exciting games does not lead to an increase in domestic abuse episodes that seem to frequently rise while viewers respond emotionally to action on the pitches.

I am making the final notes for the Regional Celebratory Event next Saturday 19 June. We have a large attendance and I really hope that you will all enjoy it.    I will give you the final figures in next week’s Newsletter both for attendance and for the Raffle result. Get ready to be stimulated by the early Soroptimists ideals and by the colourful illustrations, and by the entertainment in the short intervals.  Be ready to smile and wave, dance a jig or two and marvel at the pictures of yesterday.

S.I.Darlington and District have sent me an update on their ‘Waves of Hope’ campaign with Fair-trade . Many of you responded to me about the images of the messages on hands last week and felt they were a lively and engaging way to convey an important message. Barbara Brown has reported how the waving hands are now on display in the windows of the OXFAM Shop in Darlington.

The manager was only too happy to work with them and has already shared the news on their Facebook page saying they are proud to be working with Soroptimists. A report was sent to the ‘Northern Echo’ which was published on 10 June and the on-line edition also contained the photograph attached here.to all my sister Soroptimists – done members of SI Darlington and District for showing us how to catch the eye of the public and press.

I have decided that perhaps now is the time to think of change.   The numbers of items for inclusion in this weekly Newsletter have decreased to such an extent that I do not have enough material to make them an interesting and communicative read for all members.

I will write to you next Sunday 20 June 2021 with repoWell rts on how the Regional Celebratory event went but then suggest that the next issue be on Sunday 4th July and thereafter twice a month. I would ask you all please to think of submitting club news if you wish to keep this Newsletter alive and in use. Maybe you are all now moving around more freely, meeting friends and colleagues (at outdoor meetings ?) and generally losing the sense of isolation and loss that the Pandemic bought us ?However, the thought of having a method of letting all clubs know of Soroptimist activities in our Region is still very valid and I am happy to continue doing this for a while longer if you want me to. I look forward to hearing from you.

In friendship

Christine Lumsdon   –           your Regional President
