Soroptimist International Bangor were grateful to receive a grant from Belfast Cathedral Annual Black Santa Christmas Sit Out appeal.

The 2023 appeal raised one hundred and seventy thousand pounds, and was distributed to 120 local charities at the Good Samaritan service held in the cathedral in February. The grant to the Soroptimist will assist in covering the practical costs of providing their North Down Talking News service to the visually impaired residents of the borough.

Bangor Soroptimist started their service in 2011, it was the initiative of Soroptimist: Jennifer Loughridge with the objective of keeping the residents up to date with the local news and events.

Upwards of one hundred residents receive by post, a disc of the recorded news taken from the County Down Spectator. Often there are special requests form listeners for bridge results or sports news. Soroptimists are always pleased to receive these requests and to include them in the recordings.

The Talking News Service is only one in the programme of service undertaken by the Bangor club, if you would like to become involved with the local club or to learn more about Soroptimist International and the many areas of work in which Soroptimist undertake please contact us at: sibangorni@gmail.com
