Implementation of ‘Math Yes We Can’ Programme
in Ushatai Lokhande Charitable Trust Schools Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Kawthe Malkapur and Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Wablewadi
The ‘Math Yes We Can’ program implements the workbook “The Language of Mathematics” written by Dr, Rahael Koshy Jalan, Founder Eagles of Tomorrow, Canada.
This program was first successfully implemented in Canada and South Africa. Inspired by the success in these countries it was implemented in India in 2016. The “Math Yes We Can” program is designed to upgrade the math skills of students enrolled in high school. The program targets students in grades 8, 9, 10 and 11, who due to a variety of reasons have fallen behind in their basic math skills.
The ‘Math Yes We Can’ program is being implemented in Ushatai Lokhande Trust supported Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Kawthe Malkapur and Madhyamik Vidyalaya, Wablewadi with the help of Soroptimist International Club of Poona. These schools have received ‘The Language of Mathematics’ books through the generous donation of Ms. Nandini Sonthalia, Math Yes We Can LLP.
The set of seven workbooks costs Rs1700/- each has been distributed to 43 students of standard VIII, 30 students of standard IX, 2 teachers free of cost. Each of these schools also received a set of these workbook for their library. These set of seven workbooks have helped the students to revise the concept of number system, square and square root, fractions, angles, triangles and linear equations.
This program has been implemented stage wise from the month of September 2022 for the students of standard VIII. These students have received book-1 to book-7. The pretest and post-test scores showed a spectacular improvement in their performance and successfully completed the program.
Furthermore, this program is also extended to the30 students of standard IX from the month of January 2023.
These schools are vernacular medium schools in tribal area having Marathi as the medium of instruction. The workbooks “The Language of Mathematics” is in English, the students of standard-VIII with the help of their teachers have taken efforts to solve the workbooks. These students have also successfully completed the test papers based on these books.
The evaluation of the test papers of the students reveal a significant improvement in the multiple abilities of the student to understand the concepts of Mathematics in an efficient manner and has also developed an inclination towards the subject.
The Soroptimist International Club of Poona implemented the ‘Math Yes We Can’ program in these schools not only to develop the mathematical skills but also to develop the ability to think independently which will help them make appropriate decisions and analyse the situation, thus they can solve daily life problems.
