Let’s Read exists to support the provision of free books to local schools as part of an extra curricula literacy initiative. Its mission is “Making a difference to young lives through literacy”.  Let’s Read helps children in many primary schools in Woking to read better and to love books.  Each year Let’s Read provides in excess of 1800 books to local schools providing an effective and relatively inexpensive way to promote language growth.  In addition they provide a small library of books for Carers Support Woking.

SI Woking became involved in this project in 2006 as part of our service to the community. The club makes regular financial donations and attend the presentations of books to children in the local schools.

Our most recent fund-raising event involved a visit to the races on Saturday 1 March 2014 for Club members and other supporters of Let’s Read.

We watched and bet on some very small, pink, furry mechanical pigs racing (with some encouragement!) on a miniature track.  The pigs – baptised for the occasion with names like Peppa, Delboy Trotter and Winning Streaky – won prizes donated by a variety of sponsors for their lucky owners (participants who had paid for the privilege)

The going was fast and furious as people placed their bets and encouraged ‘their’ pig along the track with varying degrees of success.  The pigs all ran as hard as they could but Let’s Read came out as the overall winner with £640 raised by the event to spend on books to encourage children in primary schools in Woking to read at home.
