Babies in need in Uganda have recently received boxes of hand knitted clothes from the Torquay & District Soroptimist International.
Jane Davidson who runs the Homes of Promise charity in Uganda delivered some of our handiwork to the hospital and found a lady sitting outside who had just given birth. Jane was able to experience firsthand how much pleasure they bring when, to quote, ‘she squealed with delight as I handed it to her.’
Jane first visited Uganda in 2013 to meet a child she had been sponsoring through a local charity and seeing their work with poor families living in rural areas in the south west of the country, she soon realised the plight of so many young boys living on the streets there and getting dragged into a terrible way of life. Such was the effect on Jane that she decided to return for three months staying in Kampala and travelling around the country, she has now moved out there to help them full time and, hopefully, give them a better chance in life.
She has also become involved in helping out wherever she can, such as at the hospital with the newborn babies and with other children in need, hence the need for the vests and clothing. She has been doing amazing work out there, albeit very challenging with so much corruption etc. but she works tirelessly to help as many lives as she can, she’s quite an inspiration.
Here are the links to Jane’s website and facebook page, which mostly gives information about the street boys that she takes in and helps.

The aim of the Charity is the prevention or relief of poverty in Uganda – providing or assisting in the provision of shelter, housing, education, training, healthcare projects and all the necessary support designed to enable individuals to generate a sustainable income and become self-sufficient.”
Our appeal now is for those of you knitters who may wish to help further. As you can imagine, those same babies quickly grow so we are now looking to provide some larger sized tops for older babies and young children.
If you are able to contribute please bring wool or garments along to our business meetings.
