@ElmbridgeSoroptimists step up making >£1100 to accelerate diagnosis & awareness of ovarian cancer

On Saturday 8th October 3 Soroptimists from SI Weybridge & District were joined by 2 local friends to walk the 10th annual National #TargetOvarianCancer Walk/Run 2022. The cancer supports research, raises awareness of the cancer symptoms and educates healthcare professionals in diagnosis of what is a silent and killer disease of women in middle and later years.  Over 1000 walkers registered for the Walk/run mostly walking at Queen Elizabeth Park, London or again in November in Belfast or local to their homes. The charity hoped to achieve £250,000 in donations. Even with over 1000 people walking it was a challenging target sum.
@Weybridgesoroptimists and friends set off at 10am walking from Hampton Court Bridge to Kingston through Home Park, onward to Teddington Lock and across the lock to Bushy Park, a 10km course. With a few scenic pauses, a chance meet with the @Hamptoncourtpalace carthorses & a refreshment stop at the @FlyingCloudCafe, Teddington,  Team SIW&D finished in just over 3 hours. Wearing the maroon ‘Walk’ T-shirts folks looked closely at our chests to discern the cause! Some were asking questions and popping cash into the bucket we waved about. It was a glorious sunny day, with lots of chatter, smiles and energy. Thanks to the incredible walkers and generosity of some 40 donators the team exceeded our £500 target so far raising over £1170 with gift aid for the charity. It’s not too late to donate using the link below. The page will close on 20th October.
Tea and chocolate cake ensued and the feeling of #soroptimistfriendship made the day. Brenda’s office team (who fondly consider her ‘Mum’)  prepared a fun poster for the office to galvanise donations. She was a top performer in terms of sponsors as a result!
Massive THANKS for the walkers who each had a personal reason to support the cause, to all kind and generous supporters and those rallying to help us succeed with relevant #Soroptimist Program Action for improving prospects for women and girls. By the time we meet in October we’ll have the any final donations and the ‘cheque’ ready  and be able to tell you the latest GBP sums achieved nationally.  You can see our fund progress live here!
