Weybridge Soroptimists give Foodbank a timely boost

Brenda Saunders a local soroptimist was contacted by a friend who explained how much additional demand the Weybridge Foodbank was  having in lockdown, at a time when donations were dropping off the cliff as more and more regular shoppers arranged online deliveries. Brenda was delighted to see the very swift Surrey Comet coverage of the  welcome presentation of an initial donation of a sum of £500 raised by Soroptimists in the Weybridge and District Club. Brenda, seen presenting the cheque to the Foodbank Team Leader in person in July said  “It was simply amazing…the response to our club campaign #Meal4Another was instant and we soon had enough to donate £500, a first part of the planned sums. I’m fairly new to Soroptimism myself, inspired by the global voice and action this 100 year old women’s association focused on helping women and girls succeed has, it’s

The Club has this month responded to donation shortages at the Weybridge Foodbank. A reduction in supermarket shopping, as locals shop online during lockdown, has meant the Foodbank has seen a donation shortfall during recent months. On Wednesday 2 July, member Brenda Saunders from the Weybridge & District Soroptimists (SIWD) presented a cheque for £500 to Angela Miller, Weybridge Foodbank Team Leader. The money will be used to purchase food and household items and vouchers for distribution to those in need in the local area. Run by local women, SIWD is passionate about supporting programmes that improve the lives of women and girls both in Elmbridge and around the world. The branch runs regular fundraisers and supporting community projects including donating women’s health products to the Foodbank in Walton on Thames, providing much needed items which were at that time seldom reaching local collection boxes.

…towards the 100 plus women under consideration for this centenary accolade. Nominations for Marion Strehlow and Dorothy Clark MBE our two inspiring friends have been accepted by SIGBI. Mary Lodge and Alexis Neville spirited our ‘diamonds’ into sharing their histories and compiled submissions in the last week well ahead of the deadline. Now we await news as to whether they will be selected to represent the SIGBI region and have their biographies published as part of this international recognition of the leadership, inspiration and good work as individuals, in their careers and as Soroptimists.

Welcome!

#SIMeal4Another   Brenda reported at the 2020 #Soroptimists AGM that for the first time a #foodbank had been established in Weybridge to aid individuals and families in #foodpoverty locally. The #SIWeybridge & District Club is ‘taking action’ to raise much needed funds for the local food bank with a view to making a donation of cash in mid June. The money is being raised by pledges from SI current and retired members of the Club. As we cannot run face to face meetings the cost ‘saving’ from our meals will be donated to fund a “#SIWeybridgeMeal4Another“. Watch and follow to find out how much we have been pledged and donated so far and the impact it has had… Maybe other clubs might do the same? The Trussell Trust is always keen for donations. Through this support we help women bringing up families to educate, feed
