Speaker Meeting 8th May 2024: Henry Rossiter – The Watercress Project

in

Our Speaker  Meeting on Monday, 8th May welcomed Henry Rossiter, talking about the Watercress Project. At this south Bristol wildlife haven in-the-making, 1331 different plant and animal species are thriving in their rewilding project, increasing by 165 – and counting –  in just the last year. The Belmont Estate in Wraxall is a ‘redefined and reimagined country estate on a mission to regenerate land, reverse biodiversity loss and reconnect communities to nature.’. This is Henry’s family 400-acre nature restoration project. In 2019 the Rossiter family purchased nearby Watercress Farm where they also run  an educational project that involves schools’ visits, ensuring children learn about biodiversity and have the opportunity to explore nature freely. In addition, they run family days of nature-driven activities around their resetting and rewilding projects. The Watercress project is fascinating regenerative estate aiming to connect through environmental conservation. They are extending their

A small group of Soroptimists – Sally, Denise, Ivete, Lynda and her husband Martin – were guided through St Mary’s Church, the churchyard and village hall on a wonderful sunny day.   St Mary’s history dates from the Anglo-Saxon period around 692 in what was then known as ‘Henbury in the Saltmarsh’. It was then a large parish going as far north as Aust. The first Norman building was succeeded by the present one which was begun in the 12th century. In 1806 the medieval font, which is now in the churchyard, was replaced by the current black marble font.   Well known residents of the churchyard include the novelist and  Egyptologist Amelia Ann Blandford Edwards whose obelisk is decorated with the Egyptian hieroglyph “Ankh”, as a symbol of the cross because it had the similar shape. The meaning of “Ankh” is “life”.

Bristol Beacon: SI Bristol’s Visit 8th April 2024

in

On Monday, 8th April a group from  SI Bristol were taken on a tour of the Bristol Beacon, formerly known as the Colston Hall.   We started by going down to the Cellars, the venue for jazz evenings and also private hire for parties and weddings, amongst other events, where there is also an educational facility for visiting school children.   Accessible from Colston Street there is also a restaurant situated among beautiful brickwork pillars which are original but filled in with concrete in order to be weight bearing. We then went back upstairs to visit the Lantern, a large space where the Little Theatre used to be.   It is a very versatile area with a stage and seating areas with a raked area at the back which can be emptied of chairs and the steps retracted to make a larger flat space

25 Years of Transforming Leisure     We can all have some very set ideas about Leisure Centres, what they involve and who uses them.  Perhaps we think that only the fit and active among us use them!  Sarah’s talk, however, gave us a much wider insight into why, as a nation, we need to view Leisure in a far more holistic way and provide Centres that cater for all age groups with their many diverse needs and abilities to keep fit and stay healthy. The key aim being to create a much healthier and active society.  Sarah referred to examples of where new-style Leisure Centres had become a community hub of health and wellbeing as they brought people together socially as well as actively. At the end Bridget thanked Sarah and said  “Thank you for a fascinating talk this evening.  When I saw

Regional Meeting 16th March 2024

Six members of #SoroptimistBristol attended a Regional meeting of the Soroptimist International SWCI Region at Cheddon Fitzpaine on Saturday,  16th March 2024. We were delighted to welcome two excellent visiting speakers: Dishi Attwood, SIGBI Membership Director and a member of SI Stratford-Upon-Avon, and Sally Bee, President of the newly formed club Shakespeare Soroptimists International in Stratford-upon-Avon. Dishi Attwood talked about the need for flexibility when recruiting new members and indeed in order to retain members, reminding us that “Everything is impossible until you make it happen.” Following the lunch break we heard an inspiring presentation from Sally Bee, President of the newly chartered SI Shakespeare, who spoke about her life (living with Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) and having her first heart attack aged 36). At the end of the regional meeting, President Margaret handed over the chain of office to President Jackie who will now

International Women’s Day 8th March 2024 (Post 3 of 3): Celebrated at Next Link Domestic Abuse Services’ Birthday Party

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 four members of Soroptimist Bristol accepted an invitation from Next Link to attend their 25th Birthday Party celebrations held today at Triodos Bank in Bristol. Missing Link (mental health and housing) was created 40 years ago, in 1983, followed by Next Link (domestic abuse) in 1999 and Safe Link (rape and sexual assault) in 2009. All three services have been influential in raising public awareness of the needs of women with mental health issues and victims and survivors of domestic abuse in our city. At the same time they have been challenging myths and stereotypes that create barriers for women and survivors accessing support that works for them. Between the three services they had 13,456 referrals last year. Each Soroptimist Bristol member wore odd coloured shoes to highlight the inequalities that women face daily. This is an initiative from

Speaker Meeting Monday 11th March: Toby Pinn, Valuer and Former Auctioneer

Toby Pinn, who has entertained us on a number of occasions gave a most interesting talk at our Speaker Meeting on ‘The Fine Art of Valuation. Price is what you pay, value is what you get‘.He had brought a selection of objects and used these to show how prices change because of fashion and popular demand and because of the change in the value of gold and silver. The value of an item is dictated by market forces and therefore subject to constant change.Toby said that platinum used to be the most valuable metal, but its value had been overtaken by that of gold, while the value of silver had dropped. This affects the monetary value of objects but he pointed out that objects often have a value beyond price.Thank you Toby, it was a fascinating evening and we are already looking forward to your
