Centenary Celebrations in 2020 (updated 28th September 2019)

The theme for our Centenary year (2020/2021) will be Wellbeing. The focus will be broad and will include taking care of oneself, SI Bristol, women and girls, the local community and the globe. The second theme will be Looking Further, which was the motto selected by the Venture Club of Bristol when it formed in 1920. 

Members of SI Bristol are gathering information from the Bristol Archives for use in preparing a book to summarize the history of the Club. The target publication date is August 2020.

The Friendship Weekend will be 18th to 20th September. PLEASE SAVE THE DATE.

On 18th September 2020, Alice Roberts will give two talks. One during the afternoon to 6th Formers from across Bristol and one during the evening to ticket-purchasing Soroptimists, Rotarians and general public at Redland Hall, Redmaids’ High School. The topic for both talks will be ‘Science and Society’.

On 19th September, there will a lunch at the Clifton Club when the Lord Lieutenant, Peaches Golding, OBE will be the keynote speaker. In the evening, a soiree will be organised.

On 20th September, there will be a service followed by a lunch and cake.

SI Bristol gave Avon and Somerset Police knitted Trauma Teddy Bears on 15th October 2019. The Motorway Police give the bears to children involved an traffic accidents.  Thanks to Club members, Region members, and friends, the goal of 100 bears was smashed so other bears will be on display during the Centenary year.

A group of Club members are making a quilt as a fundraiser. The ‘stitch-a-quilt’ is being made in the log cabin style using up-cycled fabric.

From 1 May 2020 to 30th April 2021, Marion Reid (the President during the centenary year) is challenging herself to walk an average of 100 miles a month. During March 2020, a Just Giving page will be set up in the hope people will sponsor her in the fundraising exercise.

A book about the history of the Bristol Club is being written. The target publishing date is September 2020.
