Women’s Softball Cricket Festival
The spirit of community, competition, and cake was alive and thriving on Sunday, 8th June, as Poulton Cricket Club hosted its second annual Women’s Softball Cricket Festival. With teams from Poulton, Quedgeley, Tetbury, and Charlton Kings showcasing their skills, the event was more than just a display of sporting talent—it was a celebration of strength, support, and fundraising.
This year’s festival carried special significance, with proceeds supporting local cancer charities. The cause was especially close to home for the Poulton squad, as two of its team members had undergone breast cancer treatment this year. Their continued involvement in the game stands as a powerful testament to resilience and camaraderie found on the cricket pitch.
Cricket may have been the main event, but it was the Bake Off that added an extra layer of excitement—and sugar—to the day. Judging the competition were local Soroptimists Annie, Jill, and Lesley, who sampled a spectacular range of cakes that delighted both the eyes and the taste buds. The Soroptimists, known for their community involvement, added a thoughtful touch by donating a £10 book voucher for the Highly Commended category.
Four prizes were awarded from the official Stand Up to Cancer Great British Bake Off range: a coveted apron for the overall winner, oven gloves for the runner-up, and tea towels for third place.
The day was further elevated by the presence of special guest Fran Wilson, a professional cricketer with an impressive track record playing for the England Women’s Team and now Somerset. Her attendance inspired players and fans alike, reinforcing the growing momentum behind women’s cricket at all levels.
Youth Manager and coach Lou Pettit gave a warm welcome to all attendees, setting the tone for a day that blended sport, fun, and community spirit seamlessly. “It’s days like these,” Lou said, “that remind us what cricket is really about—teamwork, joy, and supporting each other on and off the field.”
Whether for the cricket, the cake, or the cause, the Women’s Softball Cricket Festival left hearts full, spirits high, and everyone already looking forward to next year’s event.
