The sewing bee have been hard at work during the current Covid 19 lockdown and have been making face masks. Some of these have been sold to clubs members and friends and over 90 masks have so far been donated to Frontline Fife which is a charity we support which work with homeless people
Members of SI Dunfermline are delighted to be celebrating 70 years of service to women and girls across the world. Although the party has been put on hold for the moment we are still working to make a difference to the lives of women and girls through our programme work
SI Dunfermline have for many years supported schools in the more remote areas of Rwenzori in Uganda. Over the last six years, the club has partnered with ROCDIC (Rwenzori Organisation for Children Living Under Difficult Circumstances) in projects to help raise the educational standard of 12 schools in the remote Kyonodo valley in Western Uganda. SI Dunfermline recently sponsored a two day teacher training event for Primary 6 and 7 teachers of the 12 rural schools we support as part of our Rwenzori Project in Uganda. The aim was to increase the quality of the teaching and help to raise the grades achieved by pupils in the Primary Leaving Exam. A good grade enables students to enter a good secondary school. 36 teachers attended along with the regional Director of Education who thanked Soroptimists of Dunfermline for their continued support.
Many years ago in a park far away, the ladies of Soroptimist International Dunfermline worked hard to create an orchard in celebration of the club’s 60th birthday. Over time work has been undertaken to manage the area with the view of providing an ongoing haven for the apple trees and wild life. Here are a couple of photos from the work undertaken in 2009 and a couple taken recently in preparation for the spring and the next package of work. 2020 will be our 70th birthday and there will be lots of work to make sure our orchard is an environmental haven for people as well as the wild life! We’d love to see you at our singalong on Thursday 24th January – no previous singing experience is required- just the wish to have some light hearted fun with MAMA MIA 2 the film. Usual place- Carnegie Conference Centre, Dunfermline. Cheese and biscuits and tea/coffee included in price of only £12. The bar will be open from 6:30-7:30 then we’ll get stuck into the singing! If you have appropriate costume please feel free to wear it – Elma says she has the denim overalls! We’ll be having a raffle as well so bring some more money. All proceeds will go to local charities supported by SI Dunfermline.
SI Dunfermline have done it again! We are really pleased again to have been able to hand nearly 70 Christmas boxes to our local Frontline Fife Homelessness Services based at Seagal House in Dunfermline for distribution to families in West Fife finding themselves in difficult housing situations or homeless. As part of our ongoing support of Women’s Aid the club has collected items of toiletries and cosmetics to create 24 Christmas Gift bags prepared for kids to give to their mum. We having been doing this for several years and it continues to be something that our members enjoy acquiring gifts for and that friends and family also support; always hoping that the recipients enjoy their gift.
We opened our first ever Pop Up Shop in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre, Dunfermline this morning, Thursday 27th September. Thanks to so many people for their help in donating items and lending equipment; also thanks to the Kingsgate for the use of unit 5. Our aim is to raise funds for local charities FRASAC and Women’s Aid. Come along and spend your money wisely and for a good cause. Books, Clothes, Toys, Bricabrac, Shoes, Handbags etc – all gently used and ready for reuse and recycling. Join us Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 September. We are open between 9:30 and 4:30 each day.
Thursday 27th September International Day of Peace Presentation by Christine Sime on “Jane Haining” Jane Haining was a Church of Scotland missionary working in Budapest, where she was arrested by the Nazis in 1944; dying at Auschwitz concentration camp later that year. She is the only Scot to be officially honoured for giving her life to help Jews in the Holocaust. Thursday 11th October Day of the Girl Child Celia Hodson will talk about “Hey Girls” and her approach to period poverty. For further information check out the “Hey Girls” website https://www.heygirls.co.uk/ Sadly Celia Hodson was unable to attend but new member Abby McMurtrie gave us an interesting job talk and received her Soroptimist badge. Thursday 25/10/18 Duncan Mitchell of Fife Employment Access Trust gave an insight into the extensive work the trust undertakes to help those with mental health problems.
