This year we combined International Women’s Day with British Science week and managed to secure the first British women astronaut – Helen Sharman, to be our speaker. Her presentation was at our local sixth form centre and took place atthe beginning of the school day, allowing students feom all the island schools to attend. It was an amazing opportunity for students to hear such an insporational and world class speaker. The talk flowed from one topic to another and was accompanied by the most spectacular photos and video’s from Helen and NASA, and included a view of Guerney taken from space. Hopefully many of the students present will be inspired to continue their studies of STEM subjects and maybe one of them will walk on Mars!
