We make Adama’s dream a reality

We make Adama’s dream a reality

Soroptimists of Haverfordwest were approached by Kim Allen, Communities at Work within Pembrokeshire County Council after she saw one of our Soroptimists “What and who we are” leaflets.  She thought “These are the ladies who may be able to help Adama” who was one of her clients.   Adama 31, originally from the Gambia has resided in Wales for most of her life and has always dreamt of becoming a nurse but getting there was proving difficult.  Thanks to Kim, Adama was helped to apply to the NHS Apprenticeship Scheme.   From the 700 who applied, Adama was one of 16 successful applicants.  In order to complete her studies, she would need easy access to a computer to undertake her coursework alongside her work at the hospital and looking after her 4 year old son.   Soroptimists transform the lives and status of women and girls

Heidi celebrates a successful year as Regional President

All members of SI Haverfordwest have been extremely proud this year to have one of our own leading us at Regional Level.  One of our longstanding members, Heidi Lewis, has just completed an extremely successful year as President of SI Wales South.  Despite the extremely challenging times we have all faced as a result of Covid Heidi has led us cheerfully and extremely productively through the last 12 months.  She may not have been able to pay visits in person to the 16 Clubs in our Region but she has certainly made her mark – not only within Region but also much further afield. Heidi’s theme has been “Making a Difference – Let’s Do It Together” and we have!!!  We’ve mastered Zoom, we’ve planted trees, we’ve supported our communities – locally, nationally and internationally – we really have had to think outside the box and

As part of our charitable work we have, in recent years, supported the Lend With Care scheme.  We have enjoyed supporting various businesses and hearing the stories of their success as result of receiving from us a comparatively small loan. Lend with care brings together entrepreneurs in developing countries with people with the power to help them . Whether it’s opening a market stall , or opening a small tailoring business or diversifying the crops they grow , people across the developing world are bursting  with business ideas , all they need is a helping hand to get started So far Haverfordwest Soroptimists have given 11 loans to a mix of individuals and groups and through these loans we have helped 63 entrepreneurs , 283 family members and created 6 jobs . The entrepreneurs we have lent to are from Rwanda, Vietnam,Pakistan, Malawi and Cambodia

Back in 2018 our Club President was Heidi Lewis and one of her chosen charities was Medical Detection Dogs so we sponsored a puppy to be trained up.  We recently received one of our regular updates from the Charity telling us how Misty is getting on.  We’re delighted with the progress she’s making ………… PUPPY UPDATE Misty is now 2 years old and what a busy time she’s had! Over the past year, Misty has been out and about as much as possible as she continues her assistance dog apprenticeship with Medical Detection Dogs. Now that lockdown is easing, we are able to get out and about with the dogs in training again. Misty is enjoying her experiences and has recently been on the bus and the train. She is an easy-going young lady and is very confident in new places. She really enjoys a
