We are very sad to announce the death of our dear friend Barbara Ward, a Soroptimist for over 40 years. Barbara was a member and previous President of Soroptimist International Accrington until the club’s closure when she joined SI Rossendale.
Barbara was well known for her love of the international links that Soroptimism helped her develop. She travelled to International Conferences in San Francisco, Helsinki, Durban and Hong Kong and was a regular and keen correspondent with Soroptimist clubs in Kokkola in Finland and Montana USA.
Members of SI Rossendale involved in the Wonderful Women project will remember Barbara’s stories about her experiences in the Lake District training farmer’s wives to use new fangled electric cookers when her demonstrations were often held up by the farmer needing to use the available electricity to milk cows or shear sheep. Barbara will be well known to many people in the Rossendale Valley as a lecturer at the Rawtenstall centre of Accrington and Rossendale College where she lectured in Home Economics until her retirement.
We will miss Barbara’s wit, determination and commitment.
