Semicentennial for Rossendale Soroptimist

Dorothy Smith’s 50 years’ service to Soroptimism was recognised at SI Rossendale’s 2014 AGM.

Dorothy, as Senior Librarian at the local library, joined the Bacup Soroptimist club in 1964. She was Treasurer of the Club for many years beyond the statutory six years and represented Soroptimists on several local organisations. A keen traveller Dorothy remains active in local and Club life, continuing her support for the Society for the Blind. For the past four years Dorothy has braved the often inclement Pennine weather to help serve refreshments at the renowned annual Rossendale “Round the Hills” walk. Sheila Whipp, recognising Dorothy’s remarkable contribution to Soroptimism said, “Dorothy is a modest Soroptimist who never seeks the limelight. She has been a very loyal and much valued member of the organisation and an excellent friend to everyone”.

The Club presented Dorothy with a Certificate and floral bouquet as an expression of their gratitude for her service and commitment. Dorothy said that she was “Delighted” with the gifts saying “I don’t know where the time has gone!”

The photograph shows Dorothy being presented with her bouquet and certificate by retiring President Maureen Griffin.
