President Yvonne at SI Medway and Maidstone’s Tree Planting

On the morning of 15 January, Regional President Yvonne joined 10 members of SI Medway and Maidstone and the Mayor of Maidstone, Councillor Fay Gooch, on what was a rather foggy day, at a tree planting event at Tovil, Maidstone.

This was part of the Soroptimist centennial campaign ‘Planting Trees for a Brilliant Future’. It is also one of the activities to mark SI Medway and Maidstone club’s 75th anniversary and was organised by Sharon Forghani

The Mayor broke the ground to start the planting of 420 trees saplings at Bridge Mill Way Recreation Ground.  This is a former landfill site which Maidstone Borough Council is trying to beautify and re-wild in line with their Biodiversity and Climate Change Action Plan.  The 420 trees planted at the Bridge Mill Way site were provided by The Woodland Trust. They include hawthorn, rowan, blackthorn, silver birch, hazel and common oak, ideal to provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Regional President Yvonne presented the Mayor with a small gift in appreciation of her support of the Soroptimist event.

With a real team effort by the 10 Medway and Maidstone members, 2 Soroptimisters, Derek Mortimer, Deputy Mayor and local Councillor, Andy Jesson, Maidstone Borough Council Officer and Regional President Yvonne, all 420 tree saplings were successfully planted by lunchtime.
