Bowled Over!

Bowls playersOnce again South Lancashire’s bowls final meant an exciting day for Soroptimists from all over the Region.

The team trophy was on display for the annual event, held this year at Pennington Hall Park, Leigh. Clubs had played matches over the summer season, accumulating points; the overall winner was SI Crosby.

Bowls spectatorsOn finals day, therefore, attention focussed on individual bowlers. Members from clubs in Widnes, Leigh, Crosby, Liverpool, St.Helens and Southport competed for the Tricia Fahey Trophy. This competition, named in memory of a former Federation President (and member of SI Crosby), is open to non-league bowlers who have won at least one game over the season.

Eighteen Soroptimists lined up on the day. After several knock-out rounds – and some very close games – the final was a three-way tussle between Miriam Lucy, Joan Spencer (both SI Crosby) and Dorothy Bowker (SI Leigh & District). After a hard-fought game Joan came out the winner.Bowls finalists

Regional President Margaret Baker was on hand to present the silverware – the rosebowl to SI Crosby’s team captain, Shirley Smith, and the trophy to Joan Spencer.

“As someone who has never seen bowls played before, I didn’t know what to expect.” said President Margaret. “In fact, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the games and soaking up the atmosphere alongside the clubs’ many supporters. The games attracted quite a bit of public interest, too. I extend my sincere congratulations to SI Crosby on ‘doing the double’.

Plus, a big thank-you to Margaret Molyneux and her colleagues from SI Leigh & District, who provided refreshments and enabled us to access the park’s volunteer-run café.

“This has been such an exciting day – friendly yet very, very competitive. I might even consider taking up bowls next season!”Bowls team trophy President Margaret, Shirley Smith
