Peace, Love and Three Soroptimist Clubs

‘If you can remember the 1960s – you weren’t there’. A roomful of Soroptimists from South Lancashire would totally disagree.

Four Presidents (l-r) Janet Williams (SI Southport), Margaret Davies (SI South Lancashire Region), Christine Thursfield (SI Bootle), Annette Hughes (SI Crosby)

The annual social get-together of three sister clubs – Bootle, Crosby and Southport – had a 1960s theme.

Region President Margaret Davies (a member of SI Southport) was delighted to join the party.

Dress-code was flamboyant; food included vol-au-vents, cheese/pineapple on sticks and trifle; and music was suitably foot-tapping.

This year’s hosts – SI Southport – festooned the hall with psychedelic and flower-power decorations. It was a riot of colour.

Members presented a ‘playlet’ highlighting the main events of the decade – events that prompted many anecdotes among the guests. They also set tough quizzes to challenge the memory cells, and even organised dancing tuition – the Locomotion.

The club’s oldest member – Diana Beldam, aged 101 – modelled her original 1960s outfit and demonstrated that, if not the Locomotion, she could still step out to the music.

Janet Williams (SI Southport’s President) said, “These annual ‘three-clubs’ meetings are purely social – we hold them for fun and friendship.

“Our members thoroughly enjoyed planning and hosting the party, and were delighted that all our guests entered wholeheartedly into the spirit of the 60s.”
