SI Bournemouth STEM Challenge 2014

in

SI Bournemouth has repeated the STEM Science Challenge, issued last year as part of its 75th celebrations, inviting girls in years 9 and 10 in local schools to consider careers in science when making choices about GCSE and degree subjects. The Challenge – to design, build and cost a project to help people in the poorest parts of the world which had to be sustainable, fit for purpose and cost effective – attracted entries from thirteen teams in seven schools between New Milton in Hampshire and Beaminster in West Dorset. The projects focused on the provision of clean water, shelter, improved sanitation, safer food and improved health. Judges drawn from local businesses and organisations chose a winning team from each year and some 60 parents, together with teachers and many members of SI Bournemouth were present in Kimmeridge House, Bournemouth University to see the prizes

Extensively researched and highly acclaimed LADY IN RED combines superb dialogue, a compelling plot, powerful performance and evocative colours to take the audience on a moving and thought-provoking journey with ‘Rose’ – enabling them to explore one woman’s attempts to leave an abusive relationship and the barriers she faces. This moving domestic violence drama enables audiences to connect with the issues on a personal and emotional level helping them to ‘experience’ the subject matter and develop a deeper understanding and insight into the complex issues of domestic abuse. LADY IN RED explores all elements of domestic abuse and is particularly concerned with highlighting the effects of emotional and psychological abuse. The performance lasts 45 minutes and is accompanied by an after-show discussion. This discussion workshop offers a useful means of examining attitudes, addressing myths, stereotypes and facts, providing valuable insights and breaking down pre-conceived ideas.

Let’s Read exists to support the provision of free books to local schools as part of an extra curricula literacy initiative. Its mission is “Making a difference to young lives through literacy”.  Let’s Read helps children in many primary schools in Woking to read better and to love books.  Each year Let’s Read provides in excess of 1800 books to local schools providing an effective and relatively inexpensive way to promote language growth.  In addition they provide a small library of books for Carers Support Woking. SI Woking became involved in this project in 2006 as part of our service to the community. The club makes regular financial donations and attend the presentations of books to children in the local schools. Our most recent fund-raising event involved a visit to the races on Saturday 1 March 2014 for Club members and other supporters

Shoe Biz – how old shoes can change children’s lives

SI Winchester first heard about the Shoe Biz scheme from Friendship Link SI Preston and thought it was a great idea – simple, sensible and effective.  In two weeks members raided their wardrobes and collected 85 pairs of unwanted shoes and not all of them belonged to husbands! UNICEF and Clarks, the shoe retailer, have been in partnership since 2007. In that time, Clarks has contributed to transforming children’s lives through Shoe Biz, gathering old or unwanted shoes at collection points in more than 600 Clarks stores nationwide. The shoes are recycled in the UK and the money raised funds UNICEF’s education projects.  More than 67 million children of primary school age are still not in education. This is more than the population of the UK! Clarks is helping UNICEF to ensure that more children are able to go to school. Some of the funds raised

The weather did its worst but it was a fine night inside Littleton Hall. Great fun, great food and great company and, to top it all, SI Winchester raised in excess of £1700 for The Margaret Lovell Memorial Fund in aid of Birthing in the Gambia. Together with other fund-raising efforts, notably the 2014 Corset Calendar, this will enable the club to reach its ambitious £10,000 target set by Margaret. Carol Forse created a Smilebox to celebrate the event.  You might want to turn down the volume!     The club would like to thank the following for kindly donating raffle prizes: The Running Horse, Littleton The Coach and Horses, Sutton Scotney Salisbury Racecourse ‘The Plaice’, Harestock Sparsholt Stud, Watley Farm, Sparsholt Southampton Solent University The Executors of the Estate of Margaret Lovell and the generosity of members of the Club.
