Malala Yousafzai and her book need no introduction.*  Deeming it a “must-read” for all young women, SI Winchester decided to provide a copy to five local schools.  No doubt the schools have already ordered their own copies but we wanted to demonstrate that our organisation is at one with Malala in the huge importance the club attaches to the right of every girl to an education.  The book was co-written with Christina Lamb, Foreign Correspondent with The Sunday Times and an interesting and inspiring speaker at our 2009 Federation Conference in Cardiff.       * But just in case … When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley, one girl spoke out.  Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.  On Tuesday 9 October 2012, she almost paid the ultimate price.  Shot in the head at point blank range while

At the November Regional Meeting Sonia O’Hehir of SI Winchester was asked to give her impressions of her first Federation Conference (Gateshead 2013). While we cannot reproduce Sonia’s enthusiastic delivery we can pass on her message: I have called this short piece The Four Eyes Illuminating Informative Inspiring Impressive   ILLUMINATING The light went on in regards to where the Branch sits within the Region, the Federation and International and the light also added clarity to the hierarchy – President, Immediate past president, vice president etc. etc. The fact that I am a member of a world wide organisation of 80,000 + women was also highlighted.  Our presence at the United Nations where we have category 1 Consultative status with the Economic & Social Council an accolade that does not come easy also brought home to me how powerful we can be.   To date Margaret Lovell’s Memorial Fund has raised £5,700 towards our target of £10,000 for the BIG Project. Some of this money has been used to provide a much needed ultrasound scanner. It has been installed in Brikama Hospital and will undoubtedly save lives. A brass plaque engraved with the words: “Presented in memory of Margaret Lovell by her friends in Soroptimist International of Winchester and District and Southern England” has been attached to the machine. Margaret was a great supporter of The Big Project and the Region is pleased that her name will live on as part of a project that is saving the lives of mothers and new-born babies in The Gambia.

Sue Dyer has launched a blog so that we can share the experiences of the eleven SISE Soroptimists and one brave Soroptimister during their exciting and intensive study tour.  It starts on 14th November and, over a packed fortnight, they will be visiting our sister clubs in South Africa and getting first-hand accounts of their projects.  There will also be a Skype call to the group during the Regional Meeting on 23rd November.   SI Chichester & District Club organised a very popular event to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Thursday, 29 August.  The demand for places was so great that the venue for lunch had to be changed to accommodate everyone.  After a delicious and convivial meal at the Field & Fork at the Minerva Theatre,  Judi Chaddock and  Penny Bartlett jointly cut the Anniversary Cake, which tasted even better than it looked.  Guests then walked across Oaklands Park to see a sparkling performance of Barnum, appropriately in a smart, state-of-the-art Big Top built as a replacement for the Festival Theatre while it is being re-furbished.

Fourteen attractive pillowcase dresses launch SI Winchester’s new project to bring dignity and pleasure to little girls in The Gambia. Pillowcase dresses are being made with love all over the world and now, working with local schools and Girl Guiders, SI Winchester is part of the movement which wants every little girl to have at least one pretty dress. Jean Coveyduck writes: Carol Forse and I attended the Test Valley School Fashion Show on Friday 12 July.  As part of their Project Week some Years 7 – 9 students chose a garment project.  Their teacher, Caroline Hudson wanted the 14 girls who had signed up for this project to consider doing something for others less fortunate than themselves as well as producing fashion items.  The girls, aged 11-14 years, were enthusiastic about the project and the pillowcase dresses became one of about 6 items each

Poole Soroptimist Lynn Butterworth was presented with a cheque for £250 in aid of the charity Target Ovarian Cancer following her talk about her recent experiences on her pilgrimage and fund raising walk by ‘The Way of St James’, (El Camino de Santiago), in north-west Spain.   Lynn was inspired to undertake the walk by the death of her best friend Elaine McGuiness in 2012 of ovarian cancer.  Consequently one of her chosen charities was Target Ovarian Cancer, a charity also supported by Soroptimist International of Great Britain and Ireland.  Lynn is also a member of Poole Rotary Club and the second charity to benefit was ‘Autism Wessex’, the club’s charity of the year Lynn walked for thirty eight days meeting many fellow pilgrims from different countries and backgrounds, sharing experiences such as sore feet, the best shoes to wear, the best places to rest,

People with slaves? They don’t know how to behave, so let’s demonstrate … Anti Slavery Day 18 October 2013   What do you think when you hear Anti Slavery Day?  That slavery is something of the past?  It should be, yet it’s still rife in many parts of the world.  So when did we ‘stop’ slavery?   The Abolition of the Slave Trade Act was finally passed in 1807 and all slaves were freed over the next twenty years.  How disappointing then that in the 21st century we need a day like this!   SI Poole’s Call to Action: Anti-Slavery Day is in its 3rd year on 18th October 2013 and once again we hope clubs will make use of our FREE SAMPLE RESOURCES PACK* to hold some sort of awareness-raising event on this special day, or during the same week. Last year an amazing
