Soroptimists return from Conference ready to ‘Step Up and Lead the Way’

Five (5) members of Soroptimist International Trinidad and Tobago (SITT) joined twelve hundred other Members of world-wide women’s organisation Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland (SIGBI) at the annual Conference in Cardiff

They belong to Soroptimist International which has more than 80 thousand Members volunteering in 130 countries. They also help shape policies advancing the progress of women at the United Nations.

The elimination of all kinds of violence to women, the education of women and girls and the provision of clean water and sanitation are among the organisation’s chief concerns.

At the three-day Conference in Cardiff, Soroptimists heard from Dame Katherine Grainger CBE Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian and Mandy Hickson one of the first female pilots flying multi – million pound fast jets for the RAF.

Two major themes ran through this Conference – Violence Against Women and Modern Slavery. Michael Kauffman founder of the White Ribbon Campaign addressed Conference promoting gender equality and positive ideals of manhood.

UK Anti-Slavery Commissioner Kevin Hyland OBE gave a presentation supported by Kim – Ann Williamson, Angelina Rodriques and Stephen Chapman Welsh Government Anti – Slavery Co-ordinator.

Clubs throughout the Federation are addressing these themes with their own projects.

Trinidad and Tobago club, SI Chaguanas was selected to present one of their projects “Girls in Science” where students followed their passion and are now pursuing careers in science STEM.

SI San Fernando was the proud recipient of the award for the winner for the most membership and SI Newtown winner of the best video.
