March – In Women’s History Month, Soroptimists congratulate students in Cobham

Women’s History Month is an annual observance to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding with International Women’s Day on March 8, it is observed during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration of Persons Day on October 18.

A weeklong observation in Sonoma County, California in 1978 was subsequently championed by Gerda Lerner and the National Women’s History Alliance to be recognised as a national week (1980) and then month (1987) in the United States, spreading internationally after that.

Since 1987, Women’s History Month has been celebrated every March, with one of our favourite days of the year, International Women’s Day, taking place on 8th March. Join in recognising the extraordinary contributions, resilience, and accomplishments of women who have shaped our world. From trailblazing pioneers to modern-day leaders, Women’s History Month is a tribute to the strength, intelligence and indomitable spirit of women across the globe.

#Weybridge & District Soroptimists are pleased to share with readers 5 posters created by young people during March as part of British Science Week.  The #BSW2024 Poster Competition was launched by our soroptimist club members and science teachers within @CobhamFreeSchool in Surrey in early March at a Year Group Assembly. The #BSW2024 Theme of ‘TIME’ for posters was adjusted to seek posters showcasing ‘how women have impacted in Science & Technology over time’. These 5 poster were chosen from the many (created by boys and girls aged 11-14), they highlight influential women from the past and present. The winners will be awarded prizes by soroptimists but the most significant prize is the joy of the recognition and success, which lasts a whole lifetime and increases understanding of how going the extra mile can set you apart. The Head of Science remarked ” It was nice to have students think about the fact there are still gender bias issues and it certainly inspired more students to take part. In addition having the SI reward offer for being entered increased the level of participation compared to previous years when we simply gave then the option of entering”.

Posters will be submitted to the National Competition during March and the results will be available in April. Good luck to our inspiring students!
