Focusing on personal well-being

Looking after our mental wellbeing is very important, and never more so that over this last period when coronavirus restrictions have curtailed so many activities, as well as the ability to meet up and connect with others.

With President Sharon Dixon at the helm, Bridgend Soroptimists took things into their own hands and started their very own Soroptimist Super Saturdays. Members were invited to meet on zoom on a Saturday morning for 90 minutes of gentle exercise, a few minutes of mindfulness and an open and honest chat over a cuppa about how we are all coping with lockdown! The focus was all on personal wellbeing and taking a little time for ourselves.

Since that first week in January, between 10 and 14 members have met every Saturday morning on zoom and have welcomed guests from other clubs too.

On 10th July the group were finally able to take their session outdoors with eleven ladies ready with their water and weights to do a gentle exercise routine. The session finished with a dance and energiser to music from the 60s, followed by coffee and cake.

Sharon said, “It was such a joy to meet up face-to-face. As well as our usual fun, friendship and well-being, we enjoyed coffee and cake in Enid’s beautiful garden which enhanced our well-being even more. We laughed and enjoyed being able to chat face-to-face at long last!”

President Gaynor took the opportunity of members being together to present Sharon with her Immediate Past President’s brooch.

Gaynor said, “The sessions have been great and have done wonders for our physical and emotional wellbeing all from the safety of our own homes!”

The Soroptimist Saturday Superstars also gave Sharon with champagne and flowers in appreciation for her dedication in running the sessions.

Wales South Regional President Heidi Lewis has been impressed with the way in which Bridgend Soroptimists have kept these sessions going for so long and said, “What a wonderful idea! It’s great to see members of SI Bridgend staying connected and supporting each other through such difficult times. Well done everyone!”
