Susannah De Sanvil from our sister club SI Ashford gave us a very entertaining walk-through her photos and tales from her study trip to the Meru Women’s Garden Project. In April Susannah with 24 Soroptimists from around the UK and one “Soroptimister” visited Meru County where she saw the project in action and meet some of the girls taking part. 
Delivered in a Sarah Milligan-esque style, she told us about kissing giraffes, the details of the different toilets or lack off, as well as making us feel every bump of the minibus rides.
She also covered the serious side like the Alternative Rites of Passage (ARP) weekend seminars to empower young girls on the subject of FGM, and how the project is progressing with the women growing produce in their gardens in a way that made you feel you were there with her.
For many of us, it brought the Meru Women’s garden project alive and a greater understanding was gained by all, including those who had seen many different presentations on Meru Women’s Garden Project since it became our national project in 2016. It has also inspired our own fundraising for Meru , so some of proceeds of our forthcoming tea will go to Meru, as well as donation from our club funds. We presented Glenis Miller with a cheque for £150 from our recent Shepway’s Inspirational Woman of the Year 2018 Afternoon Tea towards the Shepway Food bank. We are regular supporters of the Food bank both with collections and giving of service to support the administration side of the scheme.
We also welcomed Glenis Miller as our newest member of SI Folkestone, Glenis has been at some of our recent events and obviously liked what she saw. – Welcome Glenis and we are all looking forward to working on projects with you!
