S I Folkestone Club members visited Southend on Sunday, 31st July to view the UN/Stop ‘The Traffik Gift Box’. We wanted to show our support and thank S I Southend members and in particular, Catherine Cottridge, for the information and advice we have been given in advance of our planned project in 2017.     Especially appropriate as today our Prime Minister, Theresa May has launched her campaign to stamp out Human Traffiking and Modern Day Slavery in the UK.

Friendship and support for other clubs in the South East Region of SIGBI and beyond is one of the keystones of our organisation.  It was a wonderful day, and lovely to welcome a new club to the Region.

Our speaker for June was Claire and her Medical Detection dog  Pal.  Pal supports Claire who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes by monitoring her blood sugar levels on scent alone, and has recently achieved his 15,000 detection hit during his time with Claire.   Having him has made so much difference to Claire and her family’s lives which you could tell by the moving way she spoke about her life before she had Pal. Claire also spoke about the charity Medical Detection Dogs work with regard to the dogs being able to detect cancer at early stages, which is amazing.  Everyone found the talk really interesting and got a real understanding of the charity and its work.  Our members and their guests had the opportunity to ask questions and to say hello to Pal who stole the show with his waggy tail. The talk closed

Folkestone Soroptimists joined in the celebrations to mark International Women’s Day (Tuesday 8 March 2016) by partnering with the Folkestone’s Creative Quarter and their Women of the World Festival (WoW!). The club are grateful to the Quarterhouse for curating and hosting the Skirting Science event to encourage girls to think about careers which embrace the STEM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. It was attended by approximately 50 girls from local schools in years 9 and 10. The day started with a keynote address from Ann-Marie Imafidon co-founder of Stemettes an organisation which inspires the next generation of females into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields by showing them the amazing women already in STEM via a series of panel events, hackathons, exhibitions, and mentoring schemes.  (www.stemettes.org) The girls then split into workshops which delivered by young women all working in their chosen field

Thank you for visiting our site. A very warm welcome. The first question we are often asked about Soroptimist International is “but what does it mean” The name Soroptimist was coined from the Latin soror meaning sister, andoptima meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best interpreted as “the best women”  From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California, in 1921, through to  the present day where over 3000 clubs are flourishing throughout the world, Soroptimists have continued to strive to achieve “the best for women” in every sphere of their lives. Our Vision – Soroptimist International is a vibrant, dynamic organisation for today’s professional and business women. We are committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realize aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities worldwide.   Our Mission – Soroptimists inspire
