Regional Council & Programme Action Meeting – March 2021

President Margaret Clarke welcomed 78 Soroptimists from around the Midland Chase Region who attended the online Regional Council & Programme Action Meeting on Saturday 6th March 2021.

The first part of the Regional Council & Programme Action Meeting covered the business of the regional Council and all clubs were represented.

We were “hosted” by S I Burton on Trent who welcomed us with a “virtual tour” around their region, which you can see here:

Speakers:

Nichola Balmer of SI Lichfield & District representing Waste Savvy Staffs spoke about better ways in which we can deal with the waste we put into our black bins – especially food, textiles and recyclables/compostables. We waste over a third of all the food we produce world wide, we handle waste textiles poorly and throw away items which could easily be recycled to save resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 69% of the waste we put in our back bins in Staffordshire could have been recycled or composted!

Hannah Kitson of the British Food Box – a young entrepreneur farmer – spoke passionately and eloquently on the subject of local food, produced and supplied locally. She described how she and her partner set up the business to help fund their University courses, and how they have grown and developed their business subsequently – including how they confronted the challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic.
