Soroptimist NI Fight Modern Day Slavery
Dept of Justice Human Trafficking Engagement Group
Soroptimist International Northern Ireland has a representative (Beatrice Ferguson: SI Lurgan) who sits on the Department of Justice Human Trafficking Engagement Group. This group facilitates a partnership approach and joint working amongst Government Departments, statutory bodies, voluntary and civil society organisations and other agencies.
Human trafficking and slavery, servitude and forced or compulsory labour are largely hidden crimes, which makes it difficult to establish an accurate assessment of the nature and extent of the problem in Northern Ireland. The most reliable information is taken from the United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre’s analysis of cases that have been referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). The NRM is the United Kingdom’s national process for identifying victims of human trafficking and ensuring that they receive appropriate protection and support. Updates on these are given at each meeting of the Engagement Group.
