SI Rossendale raised £100 for local charities at this weekend’s Bacup and Stacksteads Carnival. Club members set up our ‘Aces for Faces’ tombola-type activity amidst fairground rides, dancing displays, a fantastic performance by the Gangnam Granny from Stacksteads and the world famous Britannia Coconutters. Jane Forshaw, Club President, said “It was a great day with lovely weather. The organisers did a marvellous job and the SI Rossendale club members were delighted to be part of the festivities”.

Public Health England is launching a national conversation about health inequalities to better understand the public’s view in England. The project will involve speaking with public health professionals and community leaders and holding a series of workshops with members of the public. The knowledge gained will be brought together in a toolkit that will be available for local authorities and others and a national event will bring together this learning to inform national bodies and leaders. Well not real elephants but their equivalent in litter! Chris Blomeley from Civic Pride spoke passionately to the club this week about the work they’ve done improving Rawtenstall Centre over the last ten years. Looking at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots of St Mary’s Way, the A682 coming into Rawtenstall, the area around the Peace Tree at the end of Bocholt Way and the transformation at The Fold was inspiring. Chris spoke about the positive reception the Group has had from many of the larger retailers around the town centre who now work harder to keep the area around their stores tidy and litter free. We were stunned to learn that 2000 bags of litter are picked up in and around Rawtenstall each year by the Civic Pride volunteers. At 5kg of litter per bag that’s 10 000 kgs of litter a year (the weight

A lovely day celebrating SI Leyland’s 44th Charter Anniversary

A lovely day celebrating SI Leyland’s 44th Charter Anniversary

President Maureen and other representatives from SI Rossendale had an enjoyable afternoon at Leyland Golf Club today meeting friends from across the region gathered to celebrate with Leyland on their 44th Charter. Basking in unseasonal sunshine, President Cath welcomed over 50 Soroptimists, thanking all who had travelled to be with her and the other club members on this special day. Over excellent food and good company guests were intrigued at the promise of a finale of exotic dancing and were not disappointed. There was an enthusiastic welcome for President Cath and her colleagues led by Julie Horner-Kucharski as they treated us to an elegant display of Leabanese belly dancing culminating in one of the most unusual audience participation congas that Leyland Golf Club will have ever seen! A great day was had by all.

Rossendale Soroptimists support the campaign to end Female Genital Mutilation

This summer 24,000 young girls in the UK are at risk. Some will be sent away, others will be at risk in their own homes. Some can be as young as five. It’s known as the ‘cutting season’ and although it is illegal in the UK, it is happening to girls across the country.     Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in the UK but it happens to thousands of British girls every year. FGM forces girls into a future of pain from the moment they are cut. The pain doesn’t go. It’s a traumatic experience they have to live with every single day, physically and emotionally. Fahma Mohamed and her friends campaigned for their school to do more on FGM and they have started a petition to end the silence around FGM. Rossendale Soroptimists have given their support to this on-line petition. Will

There are times in some women’s’ lives when circumstances mean they have to leave their home suddenly, so suddenly that they don’t have time to collect even the most basic items of personal hygiene. SI Rossendale members voted unanimously at this week’s meeting to resume their collection of toiletry items to make Welcome Bags to donate to organisations who support women in these situations. The group will collect small items such as bars of soap, tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel etc and make up small individual packs to be given by these organisations to women in need. Do you have unwanted gifts or toiletries that you could donate for us to use in these Welcome Bags? Could you buy an additional tube of toothpaste or a bar of soap when you do your weekly shop and donate it to us? If you can help

At a lively meeting last night the group reviewed past and present activities supporting programme action. For the newer members it was great to learn that so many of our group represent us on local bodies such as the Rossendale Blind Society, Rossendale Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Rossendale Youth Club and that a Murder Mystery Evening and a Theatre Charity Evening had raised funds for both Rossendale Hospice and Tor View School. The proposed list of speakers for 2014 is firming up nicely with some exciting events planned for the coming year. Keep an eye on our blog to learn more about what we’re up to.
