SI Sheffield

Welcome to Soroptimist International of Sheffield

Soroptimist International is a worldwide organisation for women.  Our mission is to raise awareness, act as advocates and take action to improve the advancement of the status of women throughout the world.

The club is actively involved in many local projects. In addition each year a major charity is chosen by the President which is supported by all the members .

SI Sheffield meet for supper at Hallamshire Golf Club on the third Tuesday of every month (except in August). We usually invite a guest speaker and members are encouraged to bring guests and prospective new members. On the first Monday of every month we hold our main Business Meetings, at Tapton Hall, Shore Lane. In addition, we hold special fund raising events in support of our various projects.

In order to foster friendship between our members, we have a very busy, active social calendar that people may participate in. We also hold special Programme Action Meetings.

A message from 2019/20 President

It is a great honour to be asked to be President of SI Sheffield, a club with a long history of service to the immediate community and to women and girls worldwide.

During my year in office I plan to build on the excellent leadership provided by President Diane last year. We will continue to develop the club by enjoying each other’s company, by encouraging the members to run events, fund raise and contribute in practical ways to the women’s refuges that we support and to homeless and deprived members of the Sheffield community via donations of sanitary items and food.

From my Soroptimist experience I would also like to encourage more knowledge of our worldwide Soroptimist involvement and to that end bring in speakers to help the club to recognize the value of their work as a grass roots organization in providing evidence for lobbying and work at our UN centres.

My charity for the year will be ROTHACS (Rotherham Abuse Counselling Services) who are trying to help women, who have been abused, move from being victims to survivors.

Thank you for trusting in me to serve the club and Soroptimist International in the best way possible.  Here`s to another good year as members of SI Sheffield.

President’s Charity – ROTHACS – Rotherham Abuse Counselling Service

Counselling has made me find my true self again, which makes me feel amazing.’

This is a quote from someone who has been helped by ROTHACS which has been providing specialist theraputic counselling support since 2005.  It helps women, men and young people who have experienced abuse including rape, sexual or domestic abuse, and child exploitation (CSE).  The services offered are one to one counselling, women’s therapy group, men’s therapy group, drop in sessions, and Independent Sexual Violence Advocates (ISVAs) who offer practical help and support for victims of rape, sexual abuse and families affected.  The charity relies on external funding which is diminishing and it needs to raise a large amount every year to continue to offer its services, which are desperately needed in this area.  At the moment, despite having 12 trained counsellors and three volunteers, they have a waiting list of over 300.  One of the members of SI Sheffield is on the Board of Trustees of ROTHACS, so we have adopted them as our charity for this year – 2019-2020.
