October 2023 News

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and so we promoted awareness of this through all of our social media channels and wore pink at our October Club meeting. At this meeting President Elect (joint) Diane welcomed two new club members. (Welcome Cathy and Zillah!) and celebrated long-standing member Mary’s 89th Birthday.

On the 7th October, our ‘Music for an Autumn Evening’ Concert was a great success. This concert given in partnership with Lowena Voices and Imerys Mid Cornwall Male Choir raised around £500 which was split between two charities. (Cornwall Hospice Care and @inspiringwomensnetworkkw) We experienced wonderful singing from both choirs and enjoyed joining in at the appropriate times. Our Compere Soroptimist Karen kept us laughing as well as informed about the songs performed. Our social committee did us proud with the cheese and fruit kebabs and the wine. Congratulations to those who took home raffle prizes. Definitely, an evening to be repeated.

Our next event on the 14th October was a Brunch held at Mount Charles Sea Cadet Hall. Well done to the soroptimist team, but especially AJ and Keith, who did the cooking. First-class waitressing too! Thanks to everyone who supported this event. We raised £323.10 for club charities, definitely, the best brunch in town!!!

Our next big event was our annual Autumn Fayre, held at Charlestown Church Hall. Our amazing soroptimist team came up with some creative activities and gifts. Our thanks to the visiting stall holders who supported us and the people who came to spend their money! Of course, we were dressed in pink again for this event as we promoted Breast Cancer Awareness. We were raising funds for two worthy causes – @lookgoodfeelbetter and Freedom Kit Bags . We had a most successful day and raised £1456.62.

The Orange Cafe on the 25th October was a lovely friendly event with many new members and friends joining the table at Par Garden Centre. This was the first outing for our special Orange the World banner too!

A big ‘Thank you’ to all of the new members who were able to come along to the New Members Event on the 28th October. It was lovely to see so many of you and what a great time we had! We definitely had some laughs! Two potential new members came along too which was great. Well done to Soroptimists Jane and Maggie from the Membership committee for arranging the event, including the cream teas. Excellent!
It was lovely to also hear new members feeling that the induction presentation (thank you Jill and Jennie) had given them a better overview of the organisation and also feel more confident and included within the Club. All in all a very successful afternoon.
