Members have knitted 200 brightly coloured wooly hats and 15 blankets for the newborn babies in the Birthing in the Gambia (BIG) project.
At the first meeting of 2014 The club was delighted when Julie Cowan became a member of SI St Austell.
On Sunday 24th of November members celebrated the clubs 36th ‘birthday’ with a Lunch at the Hotel Bristol. Daphne Skinnard of Radio Cornwall spoke about her appointment as Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Rotarian Ralph Curr, husband, father & brother in law of Soroptimists
The club were offered a stall in White River Place during the 12 days of Charity and decided to recreate an African Village, demonstrating a solar cooker and solar lamps. The public were offered toasted marshmallows to draw them in. Some imagination was required on a grey rainy day in December in Cornwall. Many thanks to those members of the public who made a donation.
A cheque for £422 was presented to Mary for the Childrens Hospice South West. This was raised at the popular Bingo night held at Porthpean Golf Club in November. Members wore something orange to the December meeting to show their support for the UNiTE campaign to end Violence against Women. There are 16 days of the campaign leading up to December 10th Human Rights Day.
On a gloriously sunny Sunday in late November members got together for a relaxed lunch at the Hotel Bristol Newquay. The Guest speaker was Daphne Skinnard of Radio Cornwall who spoke about her appointment as a deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Rotarian and Soroptimister Ralph Curr proposed the toast to Soroptimist International, Not only is he married to a Soroptimist but his daughter & sister in law are members. Region President Elect Kay Turner responded to the toast, her first duty in her new post. A raffle for the Diamond Education Grant raised £268 more photos on our Facebook page
10 club members travelled to Taunton on Sat 23rd to see St Austell Club member Kay installed as Region President Elect by Region President Sue Perry. Three club members gave reports on their experience as first time attendees at a Federation Conference. The speakers were Elizabeth Price a Parliamentary Outreach Officer and two workers from the Southmead project in Bristol.
