Weybridge Soroptimists Launch ‘STEMSTARS Project’ in schools as British Science Week (#BSW) approaches

As we approach British Science Week in March, Weybridge and District soroptimists are very excited! Our partnerships with two local Elmbridge secondary schools will launch. Following combined efforts from the club’s  STEM Working Party and the scientific and academic leads in both schools, ideas simply flowed. We have made steady  progress and STEM soroptimists are involved in two big events at the schools in the next week.

February 29th – A school assembly for Years 7-9 where together with the Head of Science and a 6th Form science student, we will launch the #BSW National Poster Competition to local students. The theme is on how TIME has impacted science and could impact in future.  Boys and girls will be invited to design a poster on this topic for the March deadline. Soroptimist charity  funds will provide prizes for up to 5 posters selected by year group for the school to submit to the BSW national competition. We so appreciate the donations and help from local supporters that has enabled this funding.

March 4th – A chance to showcase the resources and opportunities there are during British Science Week and STEM related career options to students aged 11-18, parents and supervising adults. At the school Careers Fair we are looking forward to talking to some of the hundreds of students and parents and to share valuable resources, advice and encouragement especially as we work to encourage wider subject study access for girls and impact the gender gap in STEM careers in Britain.

AND March 8th – International Women’s Day is the perfect way to celebrate our future ‘women’ at schools. Both schools will be provided with posters and ideas for purple #IWD events. and promotion for  International Women’s Day 2024. We will be submitting posters this week to schools to enable youth awareness of the importance of celebrating women’s progress and enabling equality and equity in all situations as we aspire to #InspireInclusion. No where more so than in Afghanistan where girl’s educational access and career progress has reverted from the amazing freedoms and progress before Taliban control. Imagine having your humanity and freedom taken away?
