Speaker Meeting 11th May 2026: Allan Schiller International Pianist – The Women in My Life

At our Speaker Meeting on 11th May we were delighted to welcome the renowned international pianist, Allan Schiller to talk about the women in his life.

Allan Schiller’s musical journey is intricately woven with the influential women who shaped his path. Each of these remarkable figures contributed to his development and success, reflecting the profound impact of mentorship and support.  Allan was born in Leeds into a musical family – his father was a professional violinist, clarinettist and saxophonist.

His Mother: A Pillar of Influence

Allan often cites his mother as the most significant influence in his life. While his father played a role, it was his mother’s unwavering support and encouragement that instilled in him a love for music and a belief in his potential from the age of 6 when he started to learn the piano. Her dedication helped lay the groundwork for his future endeavours.

Fanny Waterman: The Early Mentor

At just eight years old, Allan began his formal musical education with Fanny Waterman, a renowned teacher who had relocated from London to Leeds. Under her guidance, he developed essential skills and a deep appreciation for music, setting the stage for his burgeoning talent. At the age of ten he made his debut (described as ‘sensational’ in the press) in Leeds Town Hall playing a Mozart concerto with the Halle Orchestra under its conductor Sir John Barbirolli.

Ruth Railton: A Catalyst for Opportunity

At age eleven, Allan auditioned for Ruth Railton, who envisioned starting a youth orchestra. Impressed by his talent, she invited him to be the soloist at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival. This opportunity not only boosted his confidence but also led to performances in Belgium and Amsterdam at ages twelve and thirteen, marking his early rise in the music world.

Hilary, Countess of Munster: A Generous Patron

The Countess of Munster, talented pianist and philanthropist, played a vital role in Allan’s education by funding his lessons with Denis Matthews. Recognizing his potential, she supported his move to London and later facilitated his studies abroad at the Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow. Under the tutelage of pianist Victor Merzhanov, Allan honed his craft for two years, expanding his musical horizons.

Emmie Tillett: A Career Catalyst

In the later stages of his career, Emmie Tillett, who had a concert agency, emerged as a key figure, managing his engagements and securing numerous concert contracts. Her expertise in the industry helped Allan reach broader audiences, including performances at many notable venues.

Allan Schiller was described by a national newspaper as “the ideal Mozart pianist”.

Allan’s story is not just one of personal triumph but also a testament to the inspiring women who believed in him and paved the way for his success. Their influence highlights the importance of mentorship and support in the arts, shaping the next generation of talent.
