The business meeting held on May 3rd was the club’s first with newly inducted President, Mary Longworth.
Mary and two others attended the Women’s Aid AGM at the Queen’s Hotel Llandudno on 26th April, as the club support the organisation.
Members are looking forward to the beach clean on May 26th and to the summer outing in July to Pontcysyllte Aquaduct.
Here we are cleaning the beach on the North Shore of Llandudno:
The speaker at the meeting on May 17th was Eleri Brady, who is the fundraiser in this area for MacMillan Cancer Support.
President Mary has chosen MacMillan as her charity for this year so it was interesting to hear about the wide variety of their work. Eleri told us that MacMillan offer support in many ways to patients and their families when they have been diagnosed with cancer. They employ nurses and counsellors and there is a support helpline and support centres at hospitals. They also give financial assistance with individual grants of up to £250 and they campaign on behalf of the cancer sufferers, for example against fuel poverty. The money raised locally is for the benefit of local people and recent fundraisers include the knitting of Easter chicks by supporters which were filled with chocolate eggs, donated by Tesco, and sold in schools. Eleri and her brother also organise an annual golf day at Penmaenmawr golf club which is always well supported. The biggest national fundraiser is the annual ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ which raised £10 million in 2011. Sandra Snow thanked Eleri for her informative talk.
