Visit to Award-winning local primary school.

On a sunny June evening, President Elaine and members visited Ysgol San Sior, a local school which we have been supporting for several years. We enjoyed a power-point presentation and a tour of the school , given by Year 6 pupils and their Head Teacher, Ian Keith Jones.

Ysgol San Sior is a church-aided Primary School in Llandudno. The school is proud to fly an ECO award flag and it has won several awards for recycling innovations, including  a recent prize of £65,000 worth of Solar panels in a Daily Post/British Gas competition

Llandudno Soroptimists have had links with the school for about 5 years now. as part of our joint venture with SI. Rhyl, visiting local schools to promote our project to help “Save the Honey Bee”. When we first visited Ysgol San Sior, it  had no bee hives of its own, but now it has seven hives.

The Year 6 pupils showed us the gardens and vegetable plots, and of course the hens and golden pheasants. The school has 120 hens of many different varieties and the eggs are sold to the public. This is permitted because the school is the only one in the UK to have its own stamp for the eggs.

The eggs of the golden pheasants are usually sold on E-Bay. All the money raised from the sales of eggs goes back into the fund for looking after the hens and golden pheasants.

We were also shown the school zoo ,which has a collection of lizards, frogs, chameleons and stick insects!

The children gave a fascinating presentation of all the work they do looking after the birds and animals.

We were made to feel very welcome and we were impressed by the children’s knowledge and enthusiasm. We were pleased to present a donation to the school. Of course, we could not go home without buying some eggs and honey.
