Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Picnic

Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline Picnic

in

It is 25 years since the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. In its aftermath, radioactive rain fell on the mountains of North Wales. For this reason, Llandudno Soroptimists are supportive of Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline, which gives a group of children a holiday in North Wales each year. Soroptimists iron and repair clothing, help to buy new shoes for the children and donate items for the children to take home to their families in Belarus and Ukraine, areas which are still badly affected by the nuclear disaster. Here are the children having fun at the annual picnic organised by Llandudno Soroptimists at Old Colwyn Methodist Church.

On a sunny June evening, President Elaine and members visited Ysgol San Sior, a local school which we have been supporting for several years. We enjoyed a power-point presentation and a tour of the school , given by Year 6 pupils and their Head Teacher, Ian Keith Jones. Ysgol San Sior is a church-aided Primary School in Llandudno. The school is proud to fly an ECO award flag and it has won several awards for recycling innovations, including  a recent prize of £65,000 worth of Solar panels in a Daily Post/British Gas competition Llandudno Soroptimists have had links with the school for about 5 years now. as part of our joint venture with SI. Rhyl, visiting local schools to promote our project to help “Save the Honey Bee”. When we first visited Ysgol San Sior, it  had no bee hives of its own, but now it has seven hives. The Year 6

On Saturday 3rd June, we had an enjoyable day at the Regional Conference held at Theatr Clwyd, Mold. We heard an interesting and inspiring lecture by Dr Fay Short on the “Psychology of Abuse”. This gave us a better understanding of the issues involved when dealing with cases of domestic violence, child abuse , modern day slavery, etc. For fun, members of SI Heswall gave us a demonstration of the use of the items contained in a Story Sack to illustrate a story. The members make all the contents, which are designed to help children in local schools with their reading.   SI Llandudno member Eirwen was very lucky to win a beautiful quilt in the raffle organised by Si Ellesmere Port. Here she is with Dot cartwright and Jean Diamond from SI Ellesmere Port, receiving her prize. The quilt was made by a lady
