On Saturday 19th April, two Medway and Maidstone Soroptimists, Jane and Stella Barnes joined with other community volunteers to take part in a Foreshore Litter Pick on the River Medway. This had been organised by Friends of Rochester Churchfields and Esplanade (FoRCE) as part of their commitment to create a cleaner, more welcoming environment for people and wildlife.
We met up at the Medway Towns Rowing Club on a bright and windy morning. We were given black sacks, hoops, litter pickers and gloves and set off along the foreshore collecting all the discarded rubbish. This included plastic bottles, crisp packets and wrappers, cigarette butts, lighters and other food packaging and drink straws. There were also bulky items such as a dinghy, child’s bike, pushchair, door, and traffic cones.
The session only lasted 90 minutes but was a success and enjoyed by all, truly making a difference through the combined efforts of the volunteers.
