Sad Farewell to our Soroptimist sister Sue Hunt

Sue Hunt sadly passed away at home on Friday 14th March.

She had had a couple of spells in hospital recently. She had returned home at the beginning of March but sadly  suffered a cardiac arrest which she was unable to recover from.

Sue joined SI Maidstone in 2000. As she joined SI she had a category of Teacher in Adult Education. She also worked in Prison Education for women in East Sutton Park and Cookham Wood. Sue was Club President in 2003/04 and was club secretary for 6 years. She was a very physically active club member until a RTA in 2014 when she also suffered a stroke. It did not stop her being fully supportive of all club activities.

She started holding annual garden parties in June 20 years ago in aid of orphaned railway children in Itarsi. Her husband Chris always made sure their lovely garden was at its best.  Itarsi provides meals and schooling for the orphan children and has separate accommodation for boys and girls. This has been a three-way project with the help of Dr Nellie Adjaye and her contacts with our Friendship link club in Accra. Weavers in Accra are commissioned to weave the beautiful Soroptimist International Blue and Yellow sashes. Nellie brings them to the UK in her luggage and they continue to be sold to club members across the federation. The money made goes to the Butterfield Trust for  Itarsi and to the Accra club charities.

Sue was very supportive on the Maidstone club joining with Medway in March 2020. Sue enjoyed the days of reflection and was an active club member.

She was thoughtful and caring keeping in touch with members in friendship link clubs in Voorburg and Heswall.

Sue’s funeral was held on 25 April.
