Although it was blowing a gale, not very warm and we lost two gazebo’s, Rugby SI had a successful day at Draycote Water raising money for Water Aid. This is the 3rd year we have collected for Water Aid at the annual sponsored walk providing a welcome stop along the way with homemade cakes and water for the walkers. Thanks go especially to all the staff at Draycote Water, especially Head Ranger Tom and his assistant Ian – they were brilliant as usual. Rugby Mayor Sally Bragg started the proceedings and some of our members also joined the walk, Whilst we don’t know exactly how much we have raised just yet but we are hoping that it will be over £500.
This year our themed quiz was an absolute sell out filling a very pink and red Dunchurch Village Hall to the brim. We want to thank everyone who came and supported such a great evening with specific thanks to the organising team led admirably by SI Rugby member Wendy Kay. Huge thanks also go to Jan Bowen for being the ever competent quiz master and for the innovative Valentine’s – themed quiz rounds along with Janet Hodgson as our runner, and to Nanette Craig for her calm hand at the helm of the ‘marking and scoring’ ship! Over 80 enthusiastic players took part in the quiz and enjoyed a delicious fish supper from Waves Fish Bar in Cawston. They did a sterling job of delivering over 100 piping hot portions fish & chips to the door. We hope the money raised will help the Hill Street
Where will you be on Sunday March 19th 2017? We are organising a sponsored walk around Draycote Water near Rugby. Last year we raised £1,500 which helped get safe water, sanitation and hygiene to the millions of people less fortunate than us here in the UK. Come and join us and together we can make a difference. Member of the public signing the Handicap International petition about the forgotten people who loose limbs through land mines and cluster bombs Kate and Alyson of SI Rugby at the stand in the local shopping centre. Over 120 signatures were added to the list. The people of Rugby were very supportive.
Every year, Rugby Soroptimists put a Christmas Tree in the parish church. This year we had a smaller tree which was designed by one of our members, Ann. The tree is one of about 40 that various organisations put up every year to raise money for local charities. This is a good way to raise out profile and perhaps get new members.
As a thank you to the ladies of Brooke Court who knit blankets and baby clothes for the mothers and babies of the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, the club put on a lunch near Christmas. The ladies did not want Christmas dinner but an ordinary lunch. We cooked chicken casserole followed by apple crumble after 8s and wine.
Rugby member Rae Ogden laid a wreath at the War memorial in Rugby on Remembrance Sunday. The club have been doing this for a few years now. It was introduced by Rae when she was club President.
