Widow Rebeka Joseph of Tanzania was helped by the efforts of St Autell Soroptimists, Bath Rd Methodist Church and Jan & Gordon through Global Child Care Tanzania. A widow with 6 children Rebeka received a milking cow, school uniforms for the children, maize and beans and capital for her small business.
A 60’s/70’s evening was held for members at Charlestown Church Hall on 19th January 2012. In keeping with the theme of the evening members enjoyed sausage, mash & beans alongside great music and games from the era. There was also a raffle on the night raising money for President Libby’s charity, Cornwall Air Ambulance. The group picture even made it into the paper: Soroptimists in St Austell turn back the clock
We were pleased to welcome Jill Trewhella as a member at the September business meeting.
President Libby & Judith (along with several SI members) got hands on with some guerrilla gardening to give a St Austell public space a much needed tidy up and make over recently.
The winning team at the Quiz Night on the 4th August. Daphne set and asked the questions and £206.50 was raised on the night for the Air Ambulance plus £70 from the raffle.
Despite the atrocious weather on Sunday afternoon, an incredible £894 was raised at the Dog show and Fete, held at Tregrehan. Our awnings almost took off in the wind and we all got soaked but everyone kept smiling. Lots of people arrived with their dogs, despite the weather, with Catherine Hannaford’s husband doing a great job on the microphone. A huge thank you to those who braved the elements and came to help.
Two new members were warmly welcomed into the group; Jane Bridges & Maggie Hamilton, both pictured above receiving their badges from President Libby. For the Fete, on the 17th at Tregrehan, if anyone would still like to help they’d be welcome to, particularly anyone who can bring jam and scones as a contribution to the day. The possibility of some ‘guerilla gardening’ in August is still being discussed, details TBC nearer the time. Libby was off to Jersey for the Friendship weekend and but no doubt they’ll be more news on her return. The social cinema evening raised £100 for the charity and was well attended with Libby even serving refreshments part way through! There was a short period of discussion in smaller groups about what activities we could do to support the Purple Teardrop Campaign. Ailie will collate all the ideas an set up
President Libby hosted a very pleasant supper, at the end of June, where several club members were able to meet with Austrian Soroptimist Gabi Corr-Schnurpfiel and her husband Charlie, who were staying in St Mewan for just 2 nights. Gabi is a member of SI Steyr in upper Austria.
