Some of SI Taunton’s past projects (Programme Action initiatives) involved:

  • fundraising and voluntary work to support the 2014-2016 Presidents’ charity School in a Bag – over £10,600 raised and 700 SchoolBags funded.
  • donating to Swimathon 2016 charities – Barnado’s, Reminiscence Learning, Horseshoes and Handprints and School in a Bag.
  • donating to Swimathon 2015 charities – St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, Benchmark, Ups and Downs Southwest and School in a Bag.
  • donating to Swimathon 2014 charities – St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, the Josh Evans Trust Fund, the Albemarle Centre and North Taunton Partnership.
  • donating £500 to the Somerset Community Foundation to help those affected in Somerset by the floods of winter 2014.
  • donating £590 to buy a Shelterbox for the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal to help those affected in the Philippines.
  • raising money for 2013-14 President’s charity the Josh Evans Trust Fund (JETF) through a raffle at our 75th Charter Dinner. JETF was set up by his parents in loving memory of their son, Josh, to carry on his enthusiasm for enjoying life by helping others with diabetes, specifically children and their families in Somerset.
  • raising funds at a Fish & Chip supper for Soroptimist International President’s appeal to give cooking pots and solar lanterns to women and girls – “See Solar, Cook Solar”.
  • signing a petition calling on the UK Government to take more action to stop Violence Against Women covering areas of concern such as Modern Day Slavery and the Sex Trade, Forced Marriage and ‘honour’ Killings and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • raising money for 2012-13 President’s charity National Blind Children’s Society (NBCS) through an “Olympic Walk” and cream tea, a Quiz Night, various raffles and collecting bags of 5p coins. NBCS was launched in 1995 to provide emotional and practical support, independent expert advice and up-to-date information for British children who are blind or have vision difficulties and also their families. One of their services is the production of CustomEyes books in large print for children who cannot easily read commercially available print. The money we raised will be used to donate books to partially-sighted children in our area.
  • donating to Swimathon 2013 charities – St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, National Blind Children’s Society, the Taunton Opportunity Group, Somerset Young Carers.
  • raising money for 2011-12 President’s charity SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death) through a Barbecue lunch party, various raffles and collecting 20p-filled Smartie tubes. SANDS aims to support anyone affected by the death of a baby and to promote research to reduce the loss of babies’ lives. Some of the money raised provided funding for a SANDS professional training day locally in Taunton, for hospital and community staff including midwives, health visitors, neonatal nurses and doctors, and morticians who come into contact with bereaved parents.
  • donating to Swimathon 2012 charities – St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, Citizens Advice Bureau, SURE (Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment), SANDS (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death).
  • lobbying the local county council to retain a lead teacher at the Taunton Opportunity Group, a pre-school for children with additional needs
  • lobbying our local MPs on human trafficking issues to support the Purple Teardrop Campaign.
  • organising a Fish & Chip supper with a raffle to raise money for TLC (Teddies for Loving Care), a charity that supplies soft toys to A&E units to help comfort children in distress.
  • raising money for 2010-11 President’s charity STAR (Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation) through a walk followed by a cream tea and various raffles. STAR provides cultural and recreational opportunities for disadvantaged young people in Somerset.
  • donating to Swimathon 2011 charities – St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, Somerset Sight, Taunton Association for the Homeless and STAR (Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation).
  • filling shoe boxes with necessities and luxuries for members of 40 Commando serving in Afghanistan (recipients included men, woman and dogs!) and making a donation to help the families at home.
  • raising funds for Project SIerra, the four year Soroptimist International (SI) project in Sierra Leone in partnership with Hope and Homes for Children. The project, which ran from 2007 to 2011, has changed the lives of women and children suffering from the fallout from ten years of civil war. Over £1 million was raised by SI during the four year term.
  • donating funds to Shelterbox for the Haiti earthquake.
  • funding goats for FARM-Africa by collecting loose change at meetings. FARM-Africa supports rural Africans to work their way out of poverty with improved ways to manage crops, livestock, forests and access to water.
  • providing financial support to local schoolgirls who take part in voluntary work, for example through Raleigh International.
  • providing mosquito nets for a hospital in the Solomon Islands. This was part of a project set up by our Australian ‘sister’ club, SI Townsville, to help equip the hospital with basic facilities.
