2020 16 days of Activism

Between thee 25th November and the 10th December​ the Soroptimists of Winchester and District took part in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender based Violence with the ‘Orange the World’campaign. Each day we posted on Facebook wearing orange to show our support for some very important issues. Below you see the full 16 days…

November 25th 2020

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District will be supporting  #16DaysofActivism starting today with the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 crisis, violence against women has intensified. A shadow pandemic of domestic violence is growing and we need to stem the tide. Watch this statement from Nicole Kidman:

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting  #16DaysofActivism and today Gina Bird wears Orange to show support for Unity against rape. Soroptimists want to work together to break the silence that surrounds rape culture.

Soroptimists believe in being a voice for the voiceless. On the third day of #16DaysofActivism Julie Blackwell wears orange for the countless indigenous women and forgotten tribes whose voices have been taken away. To the women in those communities we give a voice.

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Trefenna Mitchell wears orange to show us all, how to rally against Female Genital Mutilation. As Soroptimists we believe in a total end to such a heinous assault on girls. FGM violates all child rights and is rooted in gender inequality.

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Kay Linnell wears orange to show Soroptimists want to increase awareness of the rising records of killings, attacks, and harassment against human rights defenders, including the particular challenges faced by women human rights defenders. We salute the countless women who have given their lives in pursuit of defending justice. We believe their work is so vital to promote and uphold equality.

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Deborah Watts wears orange to show we stand against Human Trafficking. The transnational activity that involves the exploitation of humans through the repeated sale. The COVID-19 crisis and its negative consequences have risked women and communities further. Soroptimists worldwide raise awareness of the exploitation of which more than half are women and girls. ​

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Barbara Jeremiah wears orange to show Soroptimists believe in a collaborative response to eliminate stigma and discrimination. We want human rights and gender-responsive approaches to be key to ending the colliding pandemics of HIV and COVID- 19.​

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Jennifer Laute wears orange to highlight the fact there is currently more slavery in the world than in any other time of history. An estimated 40 plus million people are in modern slavery. Soroptimists focus of all forms of modern-day slavery, through their projects worldwide. ​

We will work to bring links between gender and disability feature routinely in all our work

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Pat Abbott wears orange to show Soroptimists believe that child marriage is often the result of deeply entrenched gender inequalities. We, vouch for educating girls and crafting them to lead -marriage is a deterrent to those aims. Child marriage threatens the lives, the well-being and the future of girls.​

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Gina Bird wears orange to highlight the need for volunteering organizations who are transforming lives of women and girls. This is also our Day when we with volunteers of the world, celebrate the work for economic and social development in our communities. Such organizations work on peace, justice and embrace sustainable development goals.​

December 6th 2020

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Rosie Baker wears orange to remind us of the day when 14 women students were murdered for being women who were progressing to be engineers. Soroptimists worldwide reflect on this act of misogyny that revealed a rigid mind set uncomfortable with women progressing into non-traditional roles. 31 years later we remember them.

December 7th 2020

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Julie Blackwell wears orange to show we rise for the hard toil and struggle of women in rural communities who compose almost 50% of the agricultural work force. This unpaid labour is coupled with their responsibilities to their homes. Gender-based discrimination and the suffering from the impact of climate change and disasters affect them disproportionately. ​

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today Jean Edwardes displays orange roses to show Soroptimists will not tolerate sexual exploitation. We believe in a no tolerance approach to such violations of human dignity. Sexual exploitations is exploitation of a woman /girl and her body, and child sexual exploitation that leads to child prostitution. Such activity engrains stereotypes and often leads to harmful discrimination. Raise your voice against such exploitation. ​

Soroptimists Of Winchester and District are supporting #16DaysofActivism and today the whole club wears orange to encourage women find their space in the work-place and make positive progress towards leadership roles. Female employees suffer harassment. Laws of prevention of harassment at work-place are in place but more needs to be done. ​

Thank you for following our #16daysofactivism. Today we mark the anniversary of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which was a milestone document in the history of human rights. ​It set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. It has been translated into 500 languages and is the most translated document in the world. ​
