International Women’s Day 8th March 2024 (Post 3 of 3): Celebrated at Next Link Domestic Abuse Services’ Birthday Party

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 four members of Soroptimist Bristol accepted an invitation from Next Link to attend their 25th Birthday Party celebrations held today at Triodos Bank in Bristol. Missing Link (mental health and housing) was created 40 years ago, in 1983, followed by Next Link (domestic abuse) in 1999 and Safe Link (rape and sexual assault) in 2009. All three services have been influential in raising public awareness of the needs of women with mental health issues and victims and survivors of domestic abuse in our city. At the same time they have been challenging myths and stereotypes that create barriers for women and survivors accessing support that works for them. Between the three services they had 13,456 referrals last year. Each Soroptimist Bristol member wore odd coloured shoes to highlight the inequalities that women face daily.   Chavenage House, located near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, is a beautiful 16th-century manor house that welcomed a group of our members  on Thursday, 6th July 2023. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the manor and estate were granted to Thomas Seymour, King Henry VIII’s brother in law. The house was reconstructed by Edward Stephens in 1576 but parts of the present day house thought to date back to the 14th century. Upon arrival, the members were warmly greeted by a member of the family who provided a brief and amusing introduction to the house’s history and significance. We learned that Chavenage House has been in the same family for over 400 years and has been featured in several films and TV shows, including the popular British period dramas, Poldark, Emma and Lark Rise to Candleford. Our group was then taken on a guided tour of

On a warm summer evening, music and dance enthusiasts gathered at St Peter’s Church Hall in Henleaze, Bristol, for an evening of swing and jazz music with the Sisters of Swing.   Yesterday’s event was organized by Soroptimist International of Bristol to raise funds for Bristol’s Next Link Domestic Abuse Services, which supports women and children who have suffered from domestic violence. The Sisters of Swing, a local all-female swing band, kicked off the night with a high-energy performance that got everyone tapping their feet. The band’s powerful vocals, and lively rhythm section had the crowd on their feet, ready to dance the night away. As the band played hit after hit from the swing era, the dance floor filled up with couples and singles alike encompassing a wide range of ages. The Sisters of Swing’s infectious energy and talent kept the crowd entertained throughout

During the summer break we were treated to a delightful Tea Party on 30th August hosted by Lucy and Gish to raise funds for our Club’s charity of the year Next Link.   Members and friends enjoyed a cream tea in Lucy’s lovely garden on a warm summer day.  As always David and Peter two of our Soroptomisters  showed off their excellent “waiting skills”.   In addition to the tea, we sold books and plants to increase the funds and raised over £198.  Thank you, Lucy and Gish, for a lovely afternoon.     Then on 19th September Susan G and Maureen organised one of their famous Beetle Drives.      As always it was a fun evening supported not only by those attending but by donations from those unable to attend.  The event raised £343 and included a very successful raffle.Thank you, Susan G and Maureen,

We had an amazing concert in aid of Next Link our Club Charity for 2022/23.   A lot of hard work went into the preparation and on the night by Sally and her team, but it certainly paid off.  Sarah from Next Link gave a brief talk about the charity who support survivors of domestic violence. We had a full house with refreshments and from the very start the band “Sisters of Swing” enticed couples onto the floor to dance.  It was a fun evening and raised a considerable amount for the charity.  Many thanks to all those who worked hard to make it a success and a huge thank you to those of you who came to enjoy the evening with us.

Speaker meeting Monday 9th May 2022: Sarah O’Leary, CEO, from Missing Link, Next Link and Safe Link We were delighted to welcome Sarah to our Meeting on Monday she was so enthusiastic about the work that they do.  She told us how the “service” was set up and some of us were involved at that time and since then in various ways.  Next Link is not only in Bristol but North Somerset and South Gloucestershire too it is a specialist domestic abuse services for women and children. However, as well as domestic abuse support services they provide women’s mental health support services and independent support for victims of rape and sexual abuse. This year we hope to raise money for this very worthwhile local charity and also, raise awareness of issues, and help with some of their activities.  The best way to find out more
