SI Cannock Christmas Activities

Cannock & District Soroptimists will be involved in activities leading up to Christmas which aim at making life a little bit easier for some of those in need.

Locally, they will be cooking and helping to fund a full Christmas meal with all the trimmings at the Soup Kitchen, in Mill Street; a meal which is enjoyed by over 50 people who would not otherwise have a hot meal – for some, it may be the only full meal they get that week. The meal is accompanied by crackers, music and smiles and is always a very happy occasion – with lots of clean plates!

They will also continue their support of the Pathway Project, in particular the refuge for women victims of domestic violence – many of the women are there with their children. Members of SI provide gifts for the women and the children, who always appreciate the fact that someone else thought of them at Christmas.

SI is an international organisation, which fosters involvement with the women and girls who are victims of conflict and natural disaster and also those wishing to access education and equal rights. Each year on Human Rights Day, December 10th, clubs and Soroptimists all over the world raise funds for the International President’s Appeal. This year the appeal is Educate To Lead – Nepal.

Yvonne Simpson, Soroptimist International President, has released the following statement:

“The International President’s Appeal traditionally supports the most poor and vulnerable. Women and girls in Nepal need our support to rebuild their lives. Education is the best tool to raise women out of poverty and keep them safe from exploitation. The Soroptimist pledge of “Educate to Lead” will educate, empower and enable women and girls to achieve economic independence and have a future.

Through this December 10th International President’s Appeal, we will look to work with partners in order to provide education and leadership opportunities for women and girls in Nepal. With the help of the Federations, Clubs and Membership, we intend to make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of women and girls in Nepal.”

Cannock Soroptimists will be supporting this by making donations to the appeal in lieu of sending Christmas cards to each other.
